Whenever people talk about who the best candidate might be for a parliamentary selection, they talk up their local credentials. Black (African Caribbean) men have again been disenfranchised by the Labour Party with the decision to hold an AWS in Walthamstow, following on from the AWS in West Ham, and the AWS in Hackney South.

The newest parliamentary selections timetable (below) announces the long-awaited Walthamstow race and as expected, the Party has opted for an all-woman shortlist.
It could yet be an all-PhD shortlist as two of the likely contenders, Laura Bruni and Stella Creasy, both hold doctorates.

Laura Bruni has been an active member of the Labour Party since 1986, and she has substantial Parliamentary, organisation and campaigning experience. Between 1997 to 2005 she worked as Parliamentary Assistant to John Cryer MP, the Labour MP for Hornchurch. Before that up to 1997, she was a constituency caseworker for the late Bernie Grant MP and also managed his successful campaign for the regulation of immigration advisers.
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz selected for Ealing Central
Ealing Central and Acton selected local Councillor Bassam Mahfouz as their PPC for the forthcoming general election.
Councillor Mahfouz, who won the most nominations from the wards, comfortably won the selection contest yesterday. He is of Lebanese heritage, and currently works for Ealing North MP, Steve Pound.
He becomes only the second ethnic minority candidate to be selected in a winnable Labour seat for the next election.
