Are The Tories The True Progressives?

So David Cameron today claims that the Tories are the true progressive party in the UK - but why then is Tory education spokeman today blaming progressive education policies for letting down British children?

Do you think the Tories even talk to each other any more?

10p Scandal parked for now - re-unite around New Labour

Frank Field MP and many others throughout the Party almost got the job done, as thankfully Gordon Brown finally had the sense to promise to compensate those poorest people losing out from the abolition of the 10p tax rate. Time will tell if they get anywhere near adequately compensating the lowest earners. People are right to be sceptical and we must be vigilant after this catastrophe.

Societal Collapse?

The recent story of attacks on fire fighters has added even more fuel to the fire that the idea of society being on the brink of collapse. The problem is quite clearly delinquent youths - but that phenomenon has its roots in a more widespread change in society.

Progressive Conservatism is an oxymoron

David Cameron's silly use of the term 'progressive' is a clear illustration that the Tories will do almost anything to try and show that they are the party of the future. The truth about David Cameron's Tories is that they relish soundbites, image and tomorrow's headlines; have a clear sense of what will look good and almost no apparent political convictions. Since becoming leader Cameron's reforms have been primarily cosmetic (a new HQ, a new party logo) and shortlived (the party's "A" list of candidates). Cameron's new and so-called 'progressive' Conservatives are made up of the right kind of people, his people - privately educated and from a background of immense wealth and privilege. Cameron's 'progressive' Tories still believe that the role of government is to concentrate wealth and power in the hands of those who embrace their political, their economic, and their social views. Since the summer of last year Cameron has been forced to peddle past Tory agendas and has embraced more "traditional" core Tory issues such as Europe, crime and the family.

Lords reform: Labour must lead the way:

Only the Labour party has a longstanding commitment to reform the Lords, it is something that has been part of the Labour movements struggle for a better and more equal society since the birth of the Parliamentary Labour Party. In the 1910 election, nearly 100 years ago – the Labour party increased its MP’s from 29 to 40 after the House of Lords blocked the ‘peoples budget’. The Lords was hereditary, unaccountable, overwhelmingly biased towards a single party regardless of public opinion and militant in defence of the interests of one class above all others. Arguably only one of these criticisms has been fully overcome in the last century. Having pushed through some reforms in the last 10 years we must move to entrench a truly democratic legacy – Labour must live up to our constitutional commitment to putting ‘power in the hands of the many not the few’. Only the Labour party can fully see through these reforms, they will never happen under a Conservative regime – we must deliver then on our destiny, and drive through these reforms completing a journey started nearly one hundred years ago.
