It's good to see the government embracing the internet as a way of making policy-making into a genuinely two-way process.

So lets get this straight...

Help shape Labour Outlook's coverage of the 2008 Labour NEC Elections

As with the Crewe & Nantwich by-election, I'll be setting up a new section on Labour Outlook specifically to cover the 2008 Labour NEC elections.

In the spirit of 'Wikinomics', which I'm reading at the moment, I thought I'd go straight to source and ask what Labour blog readers would like to see in the section.

Would you like to submit a question to be asked of each of the candidates?

Are you interested more interested in candidates views on specific policies or on party matters?

Would you like to help out with the coverage?

Post your ideas below or email me (click 'Email Us' at Labour Outlook)

Is Eric Pickles encouraging Councils to break the law?

According to Conservative Home, Eric Pickles, the Conservative Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary, will today call for Conservative Councils to ignore instructions from government.

Since many Local Government functions are dictated by government by virtue of laws passed by Parliament, calling for the ignoring of those is presumably calling for Local Government to act unlawfully.

Equally, calling for those instructions which are not based on statute to be ignored is surely a tacit admission that many Conservative Councils are currently unaware of what discretionary powers they have?

It's not currently clear whether Mr. Pickles is calling for lawbreaking or engaging in groundless party political showboating.

Erid Pickles needs answer whether he's calling for Conservatives to ignore laws and powers passed by Parliament in an attempt to damage a government he disagrees with or, if he is simply talking about Council exercising discretion they already legally have, which Conservative Councils he feels don't understand their powers.
