Ed Miliband will remain in charge of the Labour Party manifesto, combining it with his new Climate Change and Energy role in government. Can Labour now put together a coherently 'red and green' fairness manifesto?

The current crisis is not showing the death of capitalism. But it is a regurgitation of the 1929 crash. During the 1920's, we spent unwisely, and banks were offering unsustainable, short-term profit deals to the consumer.
But this current conglomerate of crises, oil prices, banking collapses etc. present an oppertunity for the left, to outline our vision for a more social-democratic, 21st century vision of capitalism.

The Guardian, leaders from across the progressive community, civil society and from all corners of the UK have today urged every bill payer in the UK to get behind the campaign for a windfall tax on the energy and oil companies in a statement co-ordinated by Compass.

I read that airlines, especially BMI, will fly near empty planes in the expected slump this autumn to keep their
valuable Heathrow slots. This is so ridiculous - the airport slot rights situation needs rationalisation before a third Heathrow runway can be justified.

I have a dark secret. I did not want Oona King to win at the last election. I did not realise how dangerous the new member was. I was angry about Iraq at the time. Had I realised that supporting Oona would have been preferable to supporting a candidate well to the right of most Tories, I would have personally canvassed in Bethnal Green.
But, I want Oona back in politics. Post-2005, not only have I changed my politics, but she doesn't fit easily into the Blairite role. Luckily, we can look forward to at least one good result in 2010 (perhaps an isolated result, but we should fight to make sure that it isn't), and RESPECT will be kicked out of the East End.
However, we already have a great candidate in Bethnal Green, and I hope Jim Fitzpatrick kicks Galloway's ass in Poplar. So I have another suggestion. She should be our candidate for mayor in 2012.

Good news
speech this morning by Gordon Brown on creating a low carbon economy, including introducing financial incentives "such as feed-in tariffs or equivalent mechanisms" for decentralised energy and microgeneration. Why then
announce equality laws on the same day to de-focus media interest?

What we choose to eat is one of the most significant factors in the personal impact we have on the environment and the fastest path to climate change. A recent study, examining the impact of a typical week's eating, showed that plant-based diets are better for the environment than those based on meat. A vegan, organic diet had the smallest environmental impact. The single most damaging foodstuff was beef and all non-vegetarian diets, which require significantly greater amounts of environmental resources such as land and water.
It is noteworthy that the United Nations and many leading environmental organizations-including the National Audubon Society, the WorldWatch Institute, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists-have recognized that raising animals for food damages the environment more than just about anything else that we do. Whether it's unchecked air or water pollution, soil erosion, or the overuse of resources, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth.
By going vegetarian an individual can help to...

We hear today the news that the car of choice for red braces-wearing, filofax-toting, expense-account-bought-booze-quaffing stockbrokers, Porsche, are planning to take Ken to court. They are fighting for their right to pollute more in London without paying for the privilege.

Ken Livingstone has now announced that from 27 October cars with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, such as some so-called ‘Chelsea tractors’, will pay a daily charge of £25 to drive in the central London Congestion Charge Zone. Ken’s announcement, was made at his weekly City Hall press conference, where he was joined by Tony Juniper from Friends of the Earth, who said that ‘Charging gas-guzzling vehicles more to drive in central London is extremely welcome and supported by most Londoners.’ Read more at

Much has been talked about since the News of the World’s polling of the Cameron effect in Labour’s marginal seats. However, there is another group of voters out there that Gordon Brown needs to woo, and which could make all the difference.

The Nobel Peace prize has just been awarded to Al Gore for his work on Climate Change.
Do you think this will further help the global warming movement, or will it be dismissed by the US right-wing global warming deniers as 'politicisation' of a scientific issue?
I sincerely hope that Al Gore sticks to this global issue and does not use this to enter the Presidential race now. He will have more influence on this now than he could hope to have as President.

Dear prime minister Brown Please promote the findings of this U.N report and the many other of the worlds leading scientists and actively promote the many preventative benefits of the vegetarian-lifestyle as a way we can save our planet and also save the suffering of the brittish people from all the terrible illnesses related to eating the flesh of dead animals (cancer, diabetes, heart disease) adopting a vegetarian diet solves so many of the world problems in one hit .

I've always had my suspicions. With people like Melanie Philips (Daily Mail) believing climate change to be some sort of socialist conspiracy and the Sun describing environmentalists as 'green hippy lunatics' its easy to feel sceptical towards these papers when they talk about green issues. If one ever wanted proof though of the absurd lengths these papers will go to to stop action on climate change then go no further than this weeks private eye. It has an excellent story showing the amount of trash that came out of these papers preceding the heathrow protest. Read on and enjoy.
