Peter Hain will lead the call for Britain to switch to the Austrialian-style system of AV for the primary chamber - combined with a reformed upper chamber to be elected by PR - in an address to the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform later today..

In 1647 to St Marys Putney! 360th anniversary of the Putney debates

The next two weeks mark the 360th anniversary of a series of debates that took place in St Marys Church Putney between the new model army and the levellers over the English constitution and who should have the right to vote etc. These marked an important step on the road towards (for men at least) universal suffrage, equality before the law, freedom of thought and the idea that the governments need the consent of the governed to rule.

Constitutional Reform

Gordon Brown has proposed a number of constitutional reforms, many of which are to be welcomed. Here are my suggestions for a thorough reworking of the constitution. This is just 'blue skies' thinking here with no reference to political realities of today. Given that, what would others alter about our mythically great constitution?

Radical policy

Brown will want to inroduce a new radical policy in his first few days as PM, like he did with the Bank of England independence. I am hearing mutterings about a new constitution (hopefully incorporating the Human Rights Act into it). What do people think Brown's new radical policy will be?

The West Lothian Question

What with the recent elections in the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assemby and NI Ireland Assembly I thought it might be the right time to open this can of worms.
