Compass: Urgent debate on terror bill
Today Compass has launched a debate and consultation on the counter terrorism bill. We’re delighted that both Jacqui Smith the Home Secretary and Shami Chakrabarti Director of human rights group Liberty have set out the arguments both for and against the government’s proposals on the Compass website at www.compassonline.org.uk. The articles are complimented with a consultation which will run until Friday 15 February.

We should welcome debate says Compass Chair Neal Lawson
The statement launched by Progress today is to be welcomed. Not because they are right but because it helps spark a debate. So far its largely Compass saying that Brown needs to up his game. Now there is contestability over which direction and the more free market elements of Labour’s big tent will presumably welcome an injection of political competition.
Machines, markets and morals: debate announced on future of the NHS and the democratic state
Following the launch of the pamphlet Machines, markets and morals: the new politics of a democratic NHS we can announce a major debate in the House of Commons at 6pm on Thursday 28 February with Compass Chair Neal Lawson, Professor Julian Le Grand, UNISON's Head of Health Karen Jennings, Anna Coote from the Healthcare Commission and chaired by The Observer's Mary Riddell.

Over 150 people crammed into committee room 9 last night for a lively and informed debate on migration. The meeting was chaired by the country’s leading social policy commentator Polly Toynbee. The debate first heard from the Minister for Immigration, Liam Byrne who set out the reasons why he believes the policies being implemented by Labour are “firm but fair”.
Who do we want for our General Secretary?
The just published edition of the New Statesman carries a cover article by MPs Jon Trickett and Jon Cruddas which argues that the Labour Party needs to become more independent of the Parliamentary leadership and that a good place to start is the appointment of an automous general secretary, so who do Labour bloggers think that new general secretary should be?
The Tories and black Britain - new best friends?
Ahead of the Black Socialist Society's annual conference in Manchester this weekend, TMP editor, Chuka Umunna, looks at Labour’s relationship with the black community and responds to the documentary maker and Conservative Party supporter, David Matthews' piece in the latest issue of the New Statesman which argues that Labour can no longer rely on the unconditional support of black Britain.
Building the Progressive Consensus
Last night the good folk of the East Midlands gathered in Nottingham for a Compass event on building the progressive consensus. A high class panel of Ed Miliband, Hilary Wainwright and John Harris, ably chaired by academic Ruth Lister were on hand to discuss all and sundry.
A conversation with Polly Toynbee (Parts 1 & 2)
Polly Toynbee is invariably referred to as one of the most influential commentators of the New Labour era, reviled and revered in equal measure. This doyenne of the Left was formerly BBC social affairs editor and an associate editor of the Independent before rejoining the Guardian in 1998, where she had spent many years earlier in her career and where she still resides. In this in depth interview with Polly - the first for many years - Chuka Umunna, editor of TMP (the online political magazine) and Compass management committee member, talks to Polly about life and her views.
Navigating the Compass conference
Sorry, I can’t resist a pun, however, I was in fact recommended to become a “navigator” by one of the workshop speakers, so perhaps it is actually quite apt. The 4th annual conference of “Compass” took place yesterday at Central Hall, Westminster. The web site claims “Compass is the democratic left pressure group, whose goal is to debate and develop the ideas for a more equal and democratic world, then campaign and organise to help ensure they become reality”.
Closer to equality? report published by Compass assessing New Labour's record on equality
In 1997, Peter Mandelson said “I say to the doubters, judge us after ten years in office. For one of the fruits of that success will be that Britain has become a more equal society. However, we will have achieved that result by many different routes, not just the redistribution of cash from rich to poor, which others choose as their own limited version of egalitarianism…” (Peter Mandelson, Labour’s Next Steps: Tackling Social Exclusion, Fabian Society 1997)

Why I think Neal Lawson is wrong
Neal Lawson's piece in today's Guardian (A decade of Blair has left the Labour party on its knees)argues that Blair has been a huge disappointment and that the continuation or furtherance of reforms in the public sector under a new leader would be a monumental mistake.
Compass launches leadership ballot
I'm sure Hack McNally et al will be pleased to hear that Compass have now opened their deputy leadership ballot by posting statements from all the candidates (except for Peter Hain, who apparently didn't submit one) on their website....
Compass seeks deputy leadership influence
A strange thing is happening. Compass is holding a ballot on who they should recommend members to vote for - for the deputy leadership of the Labour Party.
A ceasefire is not enough
Compass has issued a statement criticising the Government for not calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Such a call is an understandable response to the continued media coverage and particularly to incidents like the reported attack on UN observers yesterday. But it is not enough.
Compass - is there anybody there?
What has happened to Compass? Has Neal lawson taken all of the staff on holiday?
