UCU: Not big fans of irony
Relieved to see that Bill Ramell, the universities minister, has tried to talk some sense to delegates to the University and College Union (UCU) conference over their boycott of Israeli academics. He told them: “I profoundly disagree with cutting links with Israeli academics,” and added: “Boycotting academics is something I find deeply disturbing. I can find no evidence that such a strategy will further peace in the Middle East.”
Palestinian Apartheid
With the news that 100 Palestinians have been killed in the last few days in Gaza, by Israeli attacks in an area with a greater population density than Calcutta; and the threat to carry out a holocaust on Palestine unless they back down; I wonder just how far the Israelis can go before an end is put to this horrific situation.
We recognised independence for Kosovo - why not do so now for Palestine?
We were so quick to recognise Kosovan independence, as was the USA. This despite the fact that it’s still has significant ‘issues’ with regards to Serbian towns within its territory.
Navigating the Compass conference
Sorry, I can’t resist a pun, however, I was in fact recommended to become a “navigator” by one of the workshop speakers, so perhaps it is actually quite apt. The 4th annual conference of “Compass” took place yesterday at Central Hall, Westminster. The web site claims “Compass is the democratic left pressure group, whose goal is to debate and develop the ideas for a more equal and democratic world, then campaign and organise to help ensure they become reality”.
