Elections to fill 6 places in PLP Parliamentary Committee will be held tonight.

They don't have a Clwyd

So Tony Lloyd has ousted Ann Clwyd as Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party. What an incredible victory for the poor foot soldiers of the Labour backbenchers over their cruel generals in Government. Finally, the PLP has someone independent minded to take on the party leadership, rather than a spineless Blair lackey - a "lickspittle" as George Galloway would no doubt refer to her.

Chief Whip 'yellow cards'

Yesterday's PLP meeting approved a new rule allowing the Chief Whip to suspend MPs from the parliamentary party.
This would create a new disciplinary power for the Chief Whip other than two existing ones: a verbal reprimand and total withdrawal of the whip.

Chief Whip seeks new powers

Chief whip Jacqui Smith is seeking the power to suspend MPs from the Labour Party. Ms Smith, who took over from Hilary Armstrong in the post-local election reshuffle, seems determined to take control of rebel backbenchers in a move that could block the reselection of "the usual suspects".
