Extend suffrage to the age of 16

In 1918, after the suffragette campaign, the fourth reform act was introduced, famously granting suffrage to women over the age of 30. In 1928 the fifth great reform act was passed, another revolutionary act which made female suffrage equal to male suffrage at the age of 21.

Forty-one years later the sixth great reform act extended the franchise to 18 after a high court appeal by the NUS. Today, there is an opportunity to make history; there is a strong case for an additional reform act, which would extend suffrage to the age of 16. This article puts the case for the extension of the franchise.

A contrite speech to the NPF, please Gordon

After Glasgow East there can be no more hunker down, stunt or top down politics from Gordon Brown. The Labour Party Leader's speech to its National Policy Forum should be scrutinised for clear evidence he has learned the messages set out by Save the Labour Party and the LabOUR Commission.

Talk of going back to the 70s does not bode well for an intelligent debate argues Gavin Hayes

There has been much talk in recent days from some quarters accusing the trade unions and others of taking us back to the 1970s. Not only is this patronising, but by defining the debate within Labour in such a crude way all it does is have a corrosive affect on the grown up and frank discussion desperately needed on how the government renews itself in office. Furthermore using such language can surely only act to alienate Labour's support further still.

All-member ballot for NPF?

At 10 am next Saturday morning, I hope to be in Birmingham to hear Gordon Brown set out further his vision for Labour in government at the Party's Spring Conference. My hope, although I'm not holding my breath, is that he will take the opportunity to praise active members - the people on whose support many elected representatives depend.

Apologies for not posting this sooner - but I had a bit of troubling registering with Labourhome and...well, it is August.
