Labour's local leaders teaching MPs about priorities, unity and loyalty
Text below from a Local Government Chronicle report this morning.
Labour council leaders back PM
Leading Labour local government figures have rallied behind prime minister Gordon Brown following the resignation of Scotland minister David Cairns.
Mr Cairns said he had resigned because he had fundamental questions over the leadership of the government.
Ten leading councillors issued a joint statement backing Mr Brown following a meeting with the PM.
They were discussing a range of issues in the run up to next week's annual conference.
The joint statement said: "There is no doubt that Gordon Brown is the right man to lead Britain.
"With families facing tough times, we need to focus all our energies on helping people manage their finances and keep their homes and jobs secure – that is certainly what Labour councillors are doing, and people expect nothing less from their MPs in Westminster."
The signatories included Sir Jeremy Beecham, leader of the LGA Labour Group and member of the Labour Party National Executive Committee, and Newham LBC elected mayor Sir Robin Wales.

To MPs calling for a leadership contest
From: One of your target voters – a floating voter!
I was for many years an active member of the labour party. I finally left when the UK was taken into the illegal and poorly planned invasion of Iraq at the behest of the USA.
Alastair Campbell, loyalty, and the media
Alastair Campbell's appearance on Newsnight last night (BBC2 September 4 2008) raised some interesting issues.
Loyal out of necessity, not conviction
Let's not fool ourselves. Our Leader says he's listening...so it's all going to be alright? He says he is going to give us a say...so it's going to be alright? Much of the media commentary implies that we (mere mortals) are hapless bystanders of the bubbling Westminster cauldron.
What is loyalty?
What is loyalty? Those who consider themselves 'loyalists', say that voting with the whip is loyalty. Loyalists at the moment show disdain for the more Ian Mikardo or Dennis Skinner minded people of the Labour Party. But isn't loyalty being loyal to your convictions? To those who have said on this website that MP's should have voted with the Government on issues like Iraq because of loyalty to Labour, would you have voted against EEC entry in 1971?
