Because of boundary changes which reduce the Salford number of constituencies to just 2, Hazel Blears (MP for Salford) and Ian Stewart (MP for Eccles) went head to head for the nomination.

During the week-end 2 selection contests took place.
Barbara Keeley has been selected to contest Worsley and Eccles South at the next election and David Clelland won the nomination for Gateshead.

In the Salford area, 3 sitting MPs are fighting for the nomination in just two constituencies. Infact the Boundary Commission has abolished one seat in the area.
The MPs in question are Ian Stewart (currently MP for Eccles), Barbara Keeley (currently MP for Worsley) and Party Chairman Hazel Blears (currently MP for Salford).
