Climate change: Help us persuade MPs
We're proudly backing a campaign to get MPs to vote for an 80% cut in emissions. This is an online campaign being run to persuade the Government to set a binding target of an 80% cut in Britain's CO2 emissions by 2050, rather than the 60% that is currently contained in the Climate Change Bill.
Tony Benn to stand again!
According to this report the former cabinet minister and veteran leftie Tony Benn will stand as a candidate again.
Badgers and TB
The Independent Scientific Group (ISG)has issued its final report into badgers and TB in cattle and found that 'badger culling is unlikely to contribute positively, or cost effectively, to the control of cattle TB in Britain' (ISG 2007 Final Report, p.23). This report offered then Secretary of State David Miliband an ideal opportunity to finally rule out badger culling as a policy option so that real efforts can be put into combatting what is a serious problem for farmers in parts of the country and an expensiveone for government.
Those results in full
Just thought this might be a good place to post the results in full so people can comment on the statistical points. The first thing on my mind is that Benn was second in the Member section and a very slight third in the Union section when he was removed from the ballot - and was just 16 MPs short of beating Jon Cruddas...
...and who knows where Jon's preferences would have gone if a Benn were still in play?...
Question Time - verdict
What do we all think? Somewhat more awkward and tougher for the candidates than Newsnight this one.
Some definite hostile vibes between Harriet and Hazel on show, with Hazel's "handbag wars" comment. Hain giving off the "you've stolen my thunder" vibe to Cruddas - since when was Hain so concerned with affordable housing? A bit of a Blears Johnson love-in at the end. Harriet objecting to the Brown "patsy" jibe. Hmmmm........

Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8
I was very chuffed indeed to be invited to Tony Benn's house to record Observer Political Editor Nicholas Watt interviewing Hilary and Tony Benn in their first interview together. They even made me a cup of tea!
To Gordon Brown and the next Labour deputy leader
This is the way we will win the next general elections.
Vote Benn and listen carefully to Cruddas
I have long declared my support for Hilary Benn - for me he is someone who embodies the core values of our movement and will help the party to reconnect with its grassroots support.
However, having met and listened to Jon Cruddas I am of the view that not only does he talk a good game he is also someone who can help us move forward as a party and really begin to address some of the core issues around party reform and structure.
I urge you to listen carefully to what Jon has to say - whatever the outcome of the deputy leadership contest he is, I hope and trust, someone who will be around to help shape the future direction of our party and our nation.

Odds shorten on Benn victory
Earlier today William Hill slashed the odds for a Benn victory - he is now 2-1 joint-favourite to become John Prescott's successor. Hilary's campaign chairman, Ian McCartney, said a successful start to the campaign and a good performance at the three deputy leadership hustings held so far was responsible for the turnaround.

DoctorDunc: A Bennite for Benn!
In the immediate aftermath of this week's events I said I'd be spoiling the ballot for the Deputy contest. But I've changed my mind.
Benn: Humility is the key to leadership
Hilary Benn officially launched his campaign today pledging to act with humility and courage if he becomes Labour's next deputy leader. Launching his bid, Hilary stated that "Real leadership means having the humility to listen as well as the courage to act." He told his packed audience of supporters and campaign team workers (which included his father Tony) : "Let the debate begin. Let us discuss ideas. Let us talk straightforwardly about the future we want. Let us set out the practical steps we can take together to make Britain a better, fairer country. No politician can create this society alone, as real leadership means having the humility to listen as well as the courage to act."
Appealing to Labour's 200,000 members, Mr Benn said it was now time for them to have their say: "Because this election must not and will not be decided in the corridors of power." With Gordon Brown now confirmed as the next prime minister, Mr Benn said the deputy leader should offer "frank advice" to his boss.
Monday: Black Socialist Society Deputy Leadership Hustings
A full house of BSS members and representatives from over 30 grass roots organisations, including the UK’s biggest trade unions, faith organisations and Black, Asian and minority ethnic pressure groups, are expected at the event in Westminster on Monday 21 May. All six deputy leadership contenders - Jon Cruddas, Harriet Harman, Hazel Blears, Alan Johnson, Peter Hain and Hilary Benn will address the hustings.
Final Nominations: who has nominated who in the Deputy contest
