It has been widely reported that European commission president, Jose Manuel Barosso, has said that the Government are actively thinking about joining the euro and Britain are “closer than ever” to joining.

In 2001 the then Goldman Sachs economist Gavyn Davies reportedly told Tony Blair that he should "wait for the dollar to fall and the euro to rise,” before thinking about joining the Euro. Seven years on and the foreign exchange markets have duly obliged and we find Sterling at its lowest ever level against the Euro. Many Europhiles have long argued that joining the Euro would help the UK by allowing it to have the same level of inflation but with significantly lower interest rates.
As Britain enters an economic downturn it might be just the time to argue for Euro entry by emphasising the benefits to the UK economy and to the average householder. It would also create an almighty headache for David Cameron.

In times of turbulence look for a good anchorage: to protect Britain from the ravages of a turbulent global environment Gordon should seriously consider steering Britain firmly into the heart of the European Union. OK so we are members, but we could still choose to be free of the unnecessary bureaucracy that goes with having our own currency and visa area.

The FT has been listening to my pub conversations and points out that the conditions are possible for entry to the Euro.
The cunning plan element is that be calling a referendum it would force Cameron's hand and make him come out against - and tear the Tories apart.

With the current slowdown in financial markets and the continuing strength of the Euro, now is as good a time as ever to launch a referendum campaign for Britain to join the Euro.
