What we choose to eat is one of the most significant factors in the personal impact we have on the environment and the fastest path to climate change. A recent study, examining the impact of a typical week's eating, showed that plant-based diets are better for the environment than those based on meat. A vegan, organic diet had the smallest environmental impact. The single most damaging foodstuff was beef and all non-vegetarian diets, which require significantly greater amounts of environmental resources such as land and water.
It is noteworthy that the United Nations and many leading environmental organizations-including the National Audubon Society, the WorldWatch Institute, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists-have recognized that raising animals for food damages the environment more than just about anything else that we do. Whether it's unchecked air or water pollution, soil erosion, or the overuse of resources, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth.
By going vegetarian an individual can help to...

We hear today the news that the car of choice for red braces-wearing, filofax-toting, expense-account-bought-booze-quaffing stockbrokers, Porsche, are planning to take Ken to court. They are fighting for their right to pollute more in London without paying for the privilege.

Ken Livingstone has now announced that from 27 October cars with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, such as some so-called ‘Chelsea tractors’, will pay a daily charge of £25 to drive in the central London Congestion Charge Zone. Ken’s announcement, was made at his weekly City Hall press conference, where he was joined by Tony Juniper from Friends of the Earth, who said that ‘Charging gas-guzzling vehicles more to drive in central London is extremely welcome and supported by most Londoners.’ Read more at

Much has been talked about since the News of the World’s polling of the Cameron effect in Labour’s marginal seats. However, there is another group of voters out there that Gordon Brown needs to woo, and which could make all the difference.

The Nobel Peace prize has just been awarded to Al Gore for his work on Climate Change.
Do you think this will further help the global warming movement, or will it be dismissed by the US right-wing global warming deniers as 'politicisation' of a scientific issue?
I sincerely hope that Al Gore sticks to this global issue and does not use this to enter the Presidential race now. He will have more influence on this now than he could hope to have as President.

Dear prime minister Brown Please promote the findings of this U.N report and the many other of the worlds leading scientists and actively promote the many preventative benefits of the vegetarian-lifestyle as a way we can save our planet and also save the suffering of the brittish people from all the terrible illnesses related to eating the flesh of dead animals (cancer, diabetes, heart disease) adopting a vegetarian diet solves so many of the world problems in one hit .

I've always had my suspicions. With people like Melanie Philips (Daily Mail) believing climate change to be some sort of socialist conspiracy and the Sun describing environmentalists as 'green hippy lunatics' its easy to feel sceptical towards these papers when they talk about green issues. If one ever wanted proof though of the absurd lengths these papers will go to to stop action on climate change then go no further than this weeks private eye. It has an excellent story showing the amount of trash that came out of these papers preceding the heathrow protest. Read on and enjoy.

The controversy surrounding Shambo, the TB reactor bullock in the multi-faith Skanda Vale religious community raises a number of serious points including the public's willingness to get gooey over an individual (think Phoenix the calf during FMD for example), but to ignore collective suffering. However, an examination of the arguments must lead one to the conclusion that Shambo must die.

I'm a (social) liberal democrat (don't let that put you off too much) and I don't usually post on this site (although I have my own blogging site at
http://aradicalwrites.blogspot.com). However, some issues go beyond party lines and the environment should be one of them. The first obstacle of getting people to accept that there is a problem has been overcome, but finding a way to deal with it is going to be far more difficult.

Between David Cameron's announcement of a "holiday tax", Lib Dem commitments to replace direct taxation with environmental levies and the government's doubling of air passenger duty from £5 to £10 in February, there is a tangible and welcome political will to take unpopular steps to curb environmental damage. Yet there seems to be a lack of understanding of the basic principle of environmental taxation: it doesn't work.
