I am pleased with the result as Jon Cruddas and Harriet Harman has been at the forefront of the centre-left debate at the husting events.  I was almost having heart failure after the first round result.  Anyway new labour is dead.  Let Labour begin!!!.

Just come back from conference.  It was very good.  Cruddas spoke at fringe and was excellent as ususal.  Key policy decisions taken including moves to deal with temporary workers and trident issues.

A lot has been said about the fact that cruddas did not back mcdonell, for me that was a unwise move.  But  we are were we are.  I would eneourage all mcdonnell supporters to vote for cruddas as a centre left person.  He is honest and an activist.  I will deal with the let-down later.

Trade Union Hustings in Congress House

Post on the Trade Unions for Labour (TULO) Hustings held last night in the TUC Headquarters in Congress House last month. See picture is of UNISON Labour Link member Rachel Voller (local Nurse) and Alan Johnson. The main hall was packed. Extra chairs had to be bought in. Brown comes in, lots of clapping, he “works” the front row very well shaking hands and looking very relaxed and confident. He then knocks a microphone off the stage. Recovers well, and starts talking to the audience. A few bits and pieces about his performance.

I will lay this down.  The party needs to recover so be you right wing or left wing eg JR to Glass House, or Jonesy or AWB.  I need to make sure we are all in different ways wanting one thing,  Labour will win the next election with a good progressive Government, with a higher mimimum wage, affordable housing, no racism, equality for all, a feerer NHS and better pensions for those who put us were we are.  We owe it to them!!!

Today's Times makes grim reading for the left and centre-left. Though less than overwhelmed by the Deputy Leadership hopefuls, I must concede that the four centre-ground candidates have at least tacked to the left. Some (Cruddas, Hain, Harman) more than others ( Benn)

I have long declared my support for Hilary Benn - for me he is someone who embodies the core values of our movement and will help the party to reconnect with its grassroots support.

However, having met and listened to Jon Cruddas I am of the view that not only does he talk a good game he is also someone who can help us move forward as a party and really begin to address some of the core issues around party reform and structure.

I urge you to listen carefully to what Jon has to say - whatever the outcome of the deputy leadership contest he is, I hope and trust, someone who will be around to help shape the future direction of our party and our nation.




Odds shorten on Benn victory

Earlier today William Hill slashed the odds for a Benn victory - he is now 2-1 joint-favourite to become John Prescott's successor. Hilary's campaign chairman, Ian McCartney, said a successful start to the campaign and a good performance at the three deputy leadership hustings held so far was responsible for the turnaround.
