'Save the planet, save the party': Ed M keeps manifesto role

Ed Miliband will remain in charge of the Labour Party manifesto, combining it with his new Climate Change and Energy role in government. Can Labour now put together a coherently 'red and green' fairness manifesto?

Wake up people!

What we choose to eat is one of the most significant factors in the personal impact we have on the environment and the fastest path to climate change. A recent study, examining the impact of a typical week's eating, showed that plant-based diets are better for the environment than those based on meat. A vegan, organic diet had the smallest environmental impact. The single most damaging foodstuff was beef and all non-vegetarian diets, which require significantly greater amounts of environmental resources such as land and water.

It is noteworthy that the United Nations and many leading environmental organizations-including the National Audubon Society, the WorldWatch Institute, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists-have recognized that raising animals for food damages the environment more than just about anything else that we do. Whether it's unchecked air or water pollution, soil erosion, or the overuse of resources, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth.

Climate change: Help us persuade MPs

We're proudly backing a campaign to get MPs to vote for an 80% cut in emissions. This is an online campaign being run to persuade the Government to set a binding target of an 80% cut in Britain's CO2 emissions by 2050, rather than the 60% that is currently contained in the Climate Change Bill.

Green Policies

I still think it is all codswallop and just another excuse to tax us.

The enviroment ,Health and our Eating habbits.

Dear prime minister Brown Please promote the findings of this U.N report and the many other of the worlds leading scientists and actively promote the many preventative benefits of the vegetarian-lifestyle as a way we can save our planet and also save the suffering of the brittish people from all the terrible illnesses related to eating the flesh of dead animals (cancer, diabetes, heart disease) adopting a vegetarian diet solves so many of the world problems in one hit .

Do we need a population policy?

Discussing population can be difficult and there is a real danger that the far right use such debates as a proxy for immigration. However, it is important to ask if Britain ought to have a policy to achieve and maintain a sustainable level of total population. There are many reasons why this might be sensible and I discuss some of them here.

The future of climate change.

Last winter was the second warmest winter on record with a mean of 5.47 degrees. With January averaging 6 degrees which  makes this the second warmest January since records began in 1914. The south of England as defined by the met Office was the warmest on record at a mean temperature of 6.53, and whilst it has been very wet in the south of England. Rain fall has not broken any records.

Climate Change and the Conservatives

There is a worrying tendency on the right to view climate change as some kind of Big Government conspiracy. I think there is a real danger that any future Tory government would not take the issue seriously. That could be catastrophic.

Scotland puts Al Gore's film 'An Inconvenient Truth' on the secondary curriculum.

I hope you will agree that the decision by the Scottish executive to put Al Gore's film 'An Inconvenient Truth on the secondary curriculum(as reported here)is an inspired move.

But what about the rest of the country? If you think Gore's film should be 'compulsive' viewing for all of Britain's secondary aged students then vote yes in the poll.

If you think that this is a step too far then vote no (obviously) and tell us why.

Carbon tax, carbon benefit

The fairest "green tax" would be to significantly increase taxes on all fuel (including red diessel and aircraft fuel) and increase VAT on domestic power to 17.5% to whatever figure is needed to reflect the CO2 that they produce and damage to the environment etc (assuming that anybody knows what the true cost of this is - I certainly don't).

The government should then distribute the total receipts per capita to everybody in the UK as a Universal Benefit.

Individual carbon allowances, fairer than green taxes?

Individual carbon allowances would allow those using less to sell credits to others who continue to use more. Green taxes are flat rate taxes which do not take income into account, and so could hit the poor hardest.
