Legislation is essential for equality says Jon Cruddas
The culmination of a fantastic campaign by trade unions saw 147 MPs, almost entirely Labour, turn out two weeks ago to back a Bill designed to give more than one million agency workers equal pay and equal treatment alongside their directly-employed counterparts.
LABOUR MPS STAND UP FOR AGENCY WORKERS!
I think that's what you call a result...., backbench Labour MPs have backed Andrew Miller's bid to end the two-tier workfirce and give equal rights to agency workers. Which will make it very, very difficult for the Government to listen to the hysterical voices of the CBI and try and weasel its way out of ensuring that the growing number of temporary and agency workers enjoy the same rights as permanent staff. We don't need a "Commission", we just need this long overdue legislation to be implemented ASAP. And here's the full list of MPs who backed it , which I notice includes Peter Hain......Alun Michael, Fiona MacTaggart and EVEN Sion Simon. Way beyond the "usual suspects", Gordon..... so you'd better start listening.
The message couldn't be clearer......here are the MPs who at last are giving us some hope things may change in the future......

Agency Workers' Bill
Tomorrow sees the second reading of a Private Members Bill put forward by Labour's Andrew Miller. The Bill aims to end exploitation of agency and temporary workers and is strongly backed by the unions and by a substantial number of backbench Labour MPs.
Email Your MP: Temp & Agency Workers Bill
TULO (Trade Union & Labour Party Liaison Organisation) has sent up an email tool to enable trade unionists to contact their local Labour MP’s. This is ask them to support the new private members Bill by Andrew Miller MP, the Temporary and Agency Workers (Equal Treatment) Bill. This Bill is up for its second reading on Friday 22nd February, and if it is to proceed then it will need the support of at least 100 MPs.
There is a drop-down menu to select your MP and a “model” message. You can also lobby via letter John Hutton MP, secretary of state for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, 1 Victoria Street

The Guardian today reports that there might be some movement in the Government’s position. Senior Labour backbenchers have met Gordon Brown aides on this issue. I believe that next month, the European Social Council will meet again to try and come to a European Union wide agreement. Hopefully this will result in a more positive result than last time!
A bad day for rights at work
No Justice for agency workers I’m afraid. The European Union “Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council” (also known for some reason as Europe’s Social Affairs council) met yesterday. I posted on Wednesday about media reports that a deal had been struck.
Apparently enough member states had agreed to finally give agency workers in the EU employment rights and to put an end to a two tier “terms and conditions” workforce. Agency staff would be on broadly similar terms as permanent staff. There is majority voting on this issue.
