Treasurership of the Labour Party

I would like to thank each and everyone of you who recently supported me in my campaign for Treasurer of the Labour party.  I was overwhelmed to receive the support of over 41% of the membership and would like to extend a huge thank you to my campaign team who have worked tirelessly over the last weeks and months to speak to members the length and breadth of the country.

writes Labourhome candidate Mark McDonald

Labour is unique amongst the three main parties in having an election for the position of Treasurer and having been contested this year I hope that the position is stronger for it.  It has been a real privilege to run in this campaign and through the discussions that I had with many members I believe that we generated some good ideas that could help improve the financial management - and the public perception - of the party.

We all know how important effective financial probity and scrutiny are and I hope that Jack Dromey will take the opportunity to look at some of the reforms that were proposed as part of our campaign and use the mandate afforded by winning this contested election to improve the party's standards of financial oversight.

For me, the election process itself has been both educational and enjoyable and while frustrating at times, fundamentally I believe it was a positive process.

I believe we have proved that, with a positive attitude and a considered agenda, an ordinary member of the party can mobilise support and influence the party’s agenda.

Thank you again,

Mark McDonald

Re: Treasurership of the Labour Party (#1)

Gutted for you Mark, as i'm sure thousands of members are. Just hope Dromey has a more competent term this time.

Re: Treasurership of the Labour Party (#2)

Well hopefully the new General Secretary will give Jack all the information he needs to do his job

Re: Treasurership of the Labour Party (#3)

Bad luck Mark. Perhaps Jack could be a bit more proactive this time and ask for all the information, and if not given, ask why not.

Re: Treasurership of the Labour Party (#4)

It is fairly difficult to ask for something when you have no knowlegde of it's exitence, just ask Donald Rumsfeld, whose sole contribution to politics is to give us the phrase 'unknown unknown'.

Voting arrangements quietly changed this year (#5)

Seems Mark was too polite to relate that the NEC organisational sub-committee changed the affiliates (unions etc) voting arrangements in May, and neglected to tell Mark - according to Tribune. Previously affiliates voted for Treasurer at conference, so candidates could canvas until then, but this year they voted at the same time as other members. Mark only discovered this change when the ballot papers were issued - he had intended to canvas Unions later.

Previously Jack Dromey had declined to take part in a Tribune organised debate with Mark.

Mike Griffiths chairs the Organisation Committee, but labour.org.uk does not list the full membership. If the Tribune article is correct, they should be shamed.

Re: Voting arrangements quietly changed this year (#6)

To be honest I would be amazed if anyone on the Organisation Subcommittee had the brain power to plan that far ahead. More likely they were just trying to save money somehow.
