Labour Seals By-Election Victory

A LANDSLIDE victory is being celebrated by the Labour Party after their candidate won the Townfield By-election.

This win in John McDonnell's constituency, shows that left wing politics are NOT the end of Labour - this is the way to go!

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#1)

What was the previous result...and how does this indicate that Left-wing politics are the way forward...?

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#4)

It's a working class vote in Hayes, and a rare victory in these days of losing by-elections. No doubt due, in no small part, to loyalty to John McD who was out and about with the candidate.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#2)

In the 2006 elections, Norman Nunn-Price polled 1,358 votes.
His successor polled 1,031 votes.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#5)

So a net loss of 340 votes then.

Quite a slim majority also.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#6)

Not a slim majority, 23.08%. That's decent enough. Labour got 45.32% of the vote - just over twice as much as the 2nd place candidate. They did loose votes but the turnout was lower. Labour did get more votes and an overall higher proportion in 2006, but you must remember that that was in a scheduled local election, not a by-election, and voters were choosing 3 councillors not one, which makes it somewhat unreliable to compare results anyway.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#7)

May be, but I'm not sure it's an indication that you should be dusting off Michael Foot on the national stage...

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#8)

I wouldn't say that either. Michael Foot is just not a vote winner. The point is that Labour was able to win a by-election comfortably, bucking the national trend, with a candidate publicly associated with the left. Interpret it as you will, but those are the facts.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#3)

Clutching at straws I'm afraid. But better than nothing!

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#9)

What that result also indicates interestingly is that when you have a left-leaning candidate with credible policies, less votes seem to splinter off to minor parties...

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#10)

I am sick and tired of right wingers stating that this was not a good result. The fact is  New Labour is dead the Labour is going to is roots. Good on John and the LRC.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#11)

Oh please...even you don't believe that.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#12)

What I'm sick and tired of is this pointless debate about left and right as if it is some kind of badge of honour. The more we posture about internal and outdated perspectives on policy, the more we lose the plot with the public. They are more concerned with getting on with their lives and more impressed if we turn up on their doorsteps to listen.

To claim a by election victory as a consequence of a left leaning MP in place is reducing campaigns and local politics to absurdity.

Re: Labour Seals By-Election Victory (#13)

"To claim a by election victory as a consequence of a left leaning MP in place is reducing campaigns and local politics to absurdity."

You can ignore that factor at your peril, what are the biggest issues affecting the Labour voters this year - 42 days and the 10p tax.
