Purnell out Privatises the Tories

Purnell has made a speech that makes the Tory Privitaisation policies seem almost Socialist...

In a move from existing Labour practices of identifying areas ripe for Privitisation, Purnell has now invited outside businesses to put in bids for any part of the DWP they can see a profit in

Announcing that a new welfare reform green paper will be presented to parliament in the near future, James Purnell set out far-reaching plans to transform the DWP, in particular Jobcentre Plus frontline delivery.

In his speech, he raised the possibility of opening up the whole of the department to privatisation, which PCS believes would have a devastating impact on the current welfare state.

The proposals also include a requirement for claimants of benefits to agree to take up training or seek medical/specialist help. PCS has continually questioned the need for such conditions when it has been proved that what customers need is assistance not threats.

While announcing this sea-change approach to the public sector, Mr Purnell praised Jobcentre Plus and its staff, stating. “It is perhaps not said often enough, but Jobcentre Plus is a world class organisation - not least because of the skills and knowledge of its staff.”

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “It is shocking that the DWP is now seen as a potential multi-billion pound industry to be exploited by private organisations pursuing a profit out of the welfare state. As well as questions remaining about the private and third sectors’ capacity to deliver welfare services, there is a fundamental issue of whether profits for the few should be the driving force of the welfare state, rather than the needs of those who rely on these services.”

DWP group president for PCS Jane Aitchison said: “While ministers praise the achievements of our members in delivering record employment levels and the lowest claimant count for 32 years, they are prepared to put these achievements at risk by transferring responsibility for getting people into work into the hands of untried and untested profit seekers in the private sector.”

PCS has been engaging in a series of seminars about welfare reform, including one hosted by the union in Cardiff on Thursday 26 June, where Mark Serwotka challenged employment minister Stephen Timms on the government’s strategy.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#1)

I can't stand Purnell. He's obviously positioning himself favourably amongst Blairites should there be a leadership contest.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#2)

When will this madness end?

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#3)

Purnell is not Labour.

Purnell is a New Whig.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#4)

I'm New Labour, but I want to hit him round the head.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#5)

Have any of you who are commenting on this actually read what James Purnell said, or are you just going by what the PCS leadership said on their website?

Just asking, on the basis that Mark Serwotka would oppose sunshine if the Goverment suggested it was a good thing.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#6)

And Purnell would privatise sunshine if sunshine's staff were members of PCS.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#7)

I have the text, but it's only on a printed leaflet rather than online and is at work.

It's actually worse than what is on the website, and was what I wanted to post, but I had to stick with what I could get!

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#8)

Sounds quite sensible to me.

As Frank Field has suggested many times, if you privatised the JobCentre and rewarded contracts to private companies on the basis of how successful they are in getting people into work then the competition will inevitably raise standards.

Can those who disagree with Purnell say why they think the JobCentres should stay in state hands? I can't help thinking that some people believe this just for the sake of believing it.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#9)

You really have no idea do you monkey?

I can't even begin to type all the problems this will cause - I just don't have the time or the will to explain how bad it is and will be because it is too depressing and annoying when noone will probably actually get round to reading it...

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#10)

I just think there are far greater worries to do with welfare. What we should ask ourselves is will this reduce the number of welfare claiments? We need to supercharge the New Deal for people of all ages, before the Tories come in with Wisconsin welfare.

Re: Purnell out Privatises the Tories (#11)

There's now been some cosying up to David Cameron's Tories about making welfare claimants work for their dole!  As a Labour supporter I am proud of the progress in tackling poverty like the introduction of the minimum wage and tackling poverty through tax credits, etc.!  But this latest idea is like taking us back to the 1930s.  Whatever next, workhouses?!
