Car Tax - the new 10p Tax own-goal?

Is the new Car Tax proposals that we were told would affect only a minority of people, but which today's reports indicate will actually affect over 40% of families, another rerun of the 10 tax proposals that also wouldn't hurt many people?

OK, so 40% is still theoretcally a minority but...

Just like we were told that there wouldn't be many losers from the 10p tax. Is Brown deliberately trying to alienate every voter one at a time or what??? Cruddas for next leader, he's our only hope!

Maybe I misunderstand this change, but for ordinary kinds of larger used cars, this doesn't seem much of an increase.

e.g A Ford Mondeo 1.6 Estate or Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 (both 172 g/km) go up by:

2007/8: Band E: £165

2008/9: Band E: £170

2009/10:  171-180 band: £205

2010/11:  171-180 band: £210

So a £45 increase over 3 years, which doesn't seem worth getting that excited about.

A smaller car like the Renault Clio 1.2 goes up zero over the three years, so in real terms drops in cost.

An ordinary Land Rover, like a Freelander 2.2, only goes up from £205 to £270 - less than a tank of fuel.

It's only really serious fuel guzzlers like big/sport Land Rovers and SUVs, and big engined executive and sport cars that take a significant hit.

Unless I misunderstand, this seems a bit of a storm in a teamcup for regular existing cars.

I think the government is right on this. We will all have to sacrifice a little to help tackle the climate change. Some will say that we should start being enviornmentally friendly when China and India get their act together, as well as the United States. But we are the fourth largest economy in the world, and we need to tighten the pressure on the big three, by showing that we can maintain a strong economy, even if there is a revolutionary strain of green in it.

But, Brown needs to put more pressure on companies. So make all companies ensure that they go by 50 miles to the gallon by 2020, and that by 2020, at least 10-15% of their cars are electric etc.

Also, green taxes should be more transparent. The Fabians suggest that taxes should be more direct, so that say, fuel duty directly subsidises transport. Why not do this with the VED's? Why not buy polluting cars off people with this new revenue, but only for quid pro quo. It will only occur if they then buy a greener car with the new found cash.

These headlines today are so misleading.  One states that 9 million face rises up to £245. All these articles sprinkle the words "up to" liberally to avoid libel cases I suppose.

I am one of the 9 million - my tax goes up £5.00 - same as usual I think - why does the media think this is something to shout about.
