Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008

We introduced a survey last month that successfully captured the mood of Labour's grassroots. Senior Labour figures have mentioned to us that they found the results intriguing and useful - and so we've now launched another one for June.

Here's the link for this month's grassroots survey - please do pass the link on to all the Labour supporters you know! We'll close the survey on June 15th, and announce the results on the 16th.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#1)

Just a little feedback, I think the "don't know" option for ministers performance should be at the start of the row rather than the end.  I didn't notice/remember this option when I filled in the form, and yet for some of them (no offence), it's the most likely answer.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#7)

I'll sort this out in the next month's survey - thanks for pointing it out!

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#2)

Would it not be better to give feedback on policy announcements rather than the performances of individual ministers (which is frankly nearly impossible to judge and surely less important)?

This should be about trying to improve the government's overall performance rather than express our admiration / dismay with Cabinet Ministers.

Less personality, more policy!

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#3)

Yes - didn't know whether to give Jackie Smith a 1 (or a 0, if that was an option, I forget) on the basis of her unpleasant authoritarian policies, or a 6 or 7, on the basis that she is relatively effective in putting forward the policies.  Obviously, 42 days is Brown's pet idea rather than hers.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#6)

I think you're right - we may have to split the policies from the personalities in our tracker.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#4)

Why is the previous survey's results not posted - i think all members would find teh results useful not just No 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#5)

Last month's survey results were published here

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#8)

I'm sorry, but this survey provides absolutely no basis for the claim that you are 'successfully capturing the mood of Labour's grassroots'. It is a survey of a self selecting group of labour activists who read this website. We have absolutely no idea whether the results can be generalised to labour grass roots activists as a whole.

Given this flawed methodology, I think the use that you are putting the results to - claiming to take the temperature of the party and to show what activitst think of the performance of the cabinet is to say the least very dodgy.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#9)

I tend to agree.  I know of only one other member of my CLP who uses this site and there are also a number of active Tories who come on here to wind us up.  What's to stop them distorting the results?  What would be more useful would be for this site, if it has any influence with the Labour leadership, to allow such surveys to be held officially by the Labour Party instead of the occasional "How Wonderful do you think our Government is? A) Slightly wonderful, B) Very Wonderful or C) The most wonderful government ever."  It might not be a good idea to publish the results and give ammunition to our opponents but at least the leadership might learn how we feel.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#12)

I don't want to go into too much detail, but I'm pretty sure we filtered out all those Tories who wanted to skew the results in any particular way.

Have you had a look at the latest survey? There's some pretty explosive stuff there (potentially).

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#11)

Actually, the survey wasn't publicised by Labourhome alone. All the major Labour supporting blogs with significant traffic took part and drove people to the survey. I'm also quite sure (based on IP tracking) that the survey participants were geographically dispersed across the country.

Re: Labour Grassroots Survey: June 2008 (#13)

Jag, that doesn't deal with my central point. The only way you could have a sample that is representative of the labour activists is if it based on a random sample of all activists (however you chose to define activists - not a trivial thing to do). People who read blogs and then decide to fill in surveys aren't chosen at random, and they aren't even neccessarily going to be activists, so we can't say for certain whether they are representative or not. As there are likely to be lots of labour activists who a) don't read blogs and b) if they do, don't bother to fill in surveys, your survey is highly unlikely to be representative.
