Sleazy tory - Giles Chichester

The BBC is reporting that the tory leader in Europe, Giles Chichester (Cameron's sleaze buster no less), channeled [read: embezzled] hundreds of thousands of pounds into a family firm.



The firm - founded by his father to publish maps - has received £445,000 since 1996 from EU coffers "in connection with secretarial and assistant services for the European Parliament, constituency and committee work".

The most laughable part; being caught is described as a "whoops-a-daisy" moment. Not even a glimmer of apology.

There are also rumours of more sleazy tories about to be outed. First Conway and now Chichester, perhaps the CON-servatives need an audit of their members.

The difference between this and a Labour scandal being, of course, that Conservativehome and other blogs and MSM opinion outlets will not now be deluged with whining about how it's all a media plot, and people are out to get them, and it's just a technicality anyway, and the rules are actually bad rules and he hasn't done anything morally wrong blah blah blah.

I'm fascinated by the lack of attack from the other parties on this issue. It strongly suggests that the others are at it too, but it's the Tories who have been caught out first.

I would say that all MEP, MP and councillor expenses should be up on the web for all to see. What do people here think?

Absolutely agree about increased transparency in expenses. It's easy for an MP to put details of their expense claims on their websites - some do it already.

The lack of attack from other parties could be due to other MEPs not wanting this to grab too much public attention since voters will just start unfairly associating all MEPs with greed and corruption.

An excellent suggestion Mr Hill.

And Chichester is a prat- even if he manages to prove that he has provided value for money (which I estimate to be a 0.000001% chance) by providing himself with secretaries etc. he's a prat for letting their be confusion. But I'm glad that he's been roundly condemned on the blogs.

If he's guilty, I really hope that we de-select him, and any others that come out in the wash - frankly, I suspect there are a few more (in my party, but others as well I shouldn't be surprised).

No change there then if the Lab MEP's are whiter than white then why aren't they screaming blue murder, at least dangerous Dave has hoofed the low lifes out instead of taking God knows how long to think about it.

Dave doesn't see to be dealing with Caroline Spelman in any hurry - he is noticeable by his silence. That nanny was no more her secretary than I am. If he was so decisive he would make her resign - but there would be more political fallout from that than with Chichester, who nobody has heard of.
