David Marshall MP to resign

Glasgow East MP David Marshall has announced he will step down because of ill health.

The party indicated that David Marshall had written to local members to announce his decision and to say his health had deteriorated.

Born in 1941, he was first elected to the Commons in 1979 representing the old Glasgow Shettleston constituency. During his Commons years he chaired both the Transport (1987-1992) and Scotland committees (1992-1997).

Deputy Leader Harriet Harman paid tribute to him today saying "He is a strong and committed supporter of the trade union movement in Scotland. A proud son of Scotland, he has fought at Westminster to improve the lives of the people in Glasgow East, the constituency that he has loved and served".

Labour won Glasgow East in 2005 taking 60.7% of the vote. SNP polled 17%, LD 11.8%, Con 6.9% and SSP 3.5%.
The seat contains all the former Glasgow Baillieston (22.8% majority in 2007 at Holyrood level) and 42% of the old Glasgow Shettleston (19.5% majority in 2007).

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#1)

Hmm...another by-election. If we lose this one we really are in trouble!

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#2)

Not an ideal time for another by-election, but hopefully it looks like a safe seat, and conversely a good solid win could help settle nerves and steady the ship.

On the other hand, a win with a massively reduced majority will make everyone look to their own constituencies and predict similar reductions...

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#4)

Am I the only person to find this post extremely offensive?  David Marshall is seriously ill, and in the coming period he and his friends and family face a difficult and trying time.  To be greeted with comments like this from a dopehead about a by-election being caused by the resignation of an MP who has fought tirelessly for the many poor and underprivileged people in the east end of Glasgow for so many years is pretty sickening, especially on a LABOUR site.

He has clearly had too much drug intake today already.

My thoughts are with David Marshall and also with the people of Glasgow who live in the constituency.  They have much thinking to do in the next few weeks about the best way forward for their area.  If they find another champion of the calibre of David Marshall to fight their cause, they will do very well indeed.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#5)

He never mentioned David Marshall. His criticism was of the party in general not the MP in particular. You on the other hand, in referring to him as a "dopehead", are exhibiting exactly the behaviour you are complaining about.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#6)

If you feel so strongly about cannabis then why not put up a post explaining why we should legalise it.

It would be a good way to start a debate on the subject.

If you want people in Glasgow to vote elsewhere because if it. Which parties support legalisation and what otherwise would they do for the people of Glasgow.

I think a fresh post would be more appropriate than making nasty comments about the Labour party when you are a guest on a Labour site and using the thread about someone stepping down through sickness to do so.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#22)

If anyone is having trouble understanding my comments and those of other posters on this thread. It is because an offensive post has been removed.

I thank the admin for doing this.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#17)

'white males'?

Last time I checked people of all colours and genders smoked cannabis.

I'm a white male and it didn't annoy me beyond the fact that it was utterly needless. It's not going to affect anyone's ability to smoke cannabis let's be honest!

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#7)

My guess is that Labour will just hold the seat, but with 30-40% of the vote.  However if all the opposition parties campaign on the basis that this is a chance to "send a message to Gordon Brown" there is a chance that Labour will lose.  Which would surely force Brown to follow Wendy Alexander's fine example??

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#11)

I wonder how many candidates will stand on an anti-42 days platform?

After all, Labour have not stood in H&H, so Glasgow East could be the perfect opportunity for Labour to explain, to their core supporters in this slice of working class Labour following heartland, why 42 days detention without charge is such a good idea?

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#9)

I have a feeling the donation scandal and the expenses fiasco will see a number of MP's going or looking over their shoulders. It's sad the one thing I said when Labour won the election in 1997 was now for some real clean clear politics, no more spin no more bull, boy was I wrong.

I think we might see more MP's deciding it's better to finish now then be removed by the people because of scandals. From all parties.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#10)

Are the last two comments actually suggesting that there is a scandal behind this resignation on health grounds? If so can you please put up or shut up? Apologising on your way out?

Presumably this event is separate from the speculation from benedict Brogan around a month ago of a by-election on health grounds in Fifeshire, somewhere where that election ought to be much more closely contested than this one

Any news on Chichester?

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#12)

MPs who are too ill to do their job, and whose doctors say they will not be fit within a reasonable time, are surely right to resign. They owe that resignation to themselves, to their families and to their constituents. The Whips (who to their credit have said nothing (or nothing openly) on this occasion, who nowadays usually oppose such resignations tooth and nail are damaging the reputation of politics. Losing a by-election is no more than a week's bad news, It should not worry any Government with the sort of majority Labour now has.

On this occasion, the resigning MP has every reason to think that he is handing the party  a chance to demonstrate solidly that it can hold and win seats. Over 60% of the vote with the opposition split and no one else over 20% is as solid as it gets.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#16)

This is Labour Home, not Have a Go at Labour Home.  If you want to moan about Labour is a whinging, whining boring boring manner, why don't you go post else where?

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#19)

Right. Sure. We're losing support because we're too tough on crime. That's certainly what I hear from people on the doorsteps... no, wait, it isn't.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#15)

It doesn't look good.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#20)

The FT says: One senior Labour MP said on Sunday he hoped Glasgow voters would deliver a knockout blow to Mr Brown. “The cabinet seems to have lost its nerve in telling him to go,” the MP said. “Maybe the voters will do it for them.”

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#21)

It's a perfect by-election to be a judge of, and member of, Labour. Do well, and it can be claimed that true, real Labour heartland voters still support Brown and the Labour project.

Do badly, and it's clear than Brown must go, if even somewhere as traditionally working class as the east of Glasgow is voting somewhere other than Labour.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#23)

So he does not have problems with his expenses then, like the idea of him resigning because of ill health and you lot telling the disabled and the sick it's time you worked, ill health to Labour means working on reduced hours or adaption perhaps he needs a wheelchair and carry on, do not forget under New Labour people with cancer who are deemed able to work must now work until six month before death.

I do not think he is going to die within six months is he.

The two faces of Labour sorry new Labour.

Re: David Marshall MP to resign (#24)

"A Labour MP used almost £500,000 of taxpayers' money over six years to help run an office from his home which was staffed by his wife.
David Marshall, 67, who has quit to spark the Glasgow East by-election on July 24, used the expenses to pay for a constituency office and staff.
But Mr Marshall's office was in his semi-detached Glasgow home and he employed his wife Tina as his secretary. It is also believed he paid his daughter Christina to work from his home from the same pool of money.
A Commons spokesman said MPs can use their home as an office but only claim for additional costs like 'extra phone lines, heating and lighting'.
From 2001-2007, Mr Marshall claimed £91,000 incidental expenses provision, which is used to pay for constituency offices, plus £400,000 for staff and £11,000 for their travel expenses.
He listed only one member of staff on the Commons register - Christina Marshall. It was unclear if this was his wife Tina or daughter Christina.
Neighbours and political sources said his wife had worked for him - with Labour ex-Minister Brian Wilson saying that Mrs Marshall had worked for her husband as a constituency secretary.
Mr Marshall is said to be suffering clinical depression. Party sources said he felt 'under pressure' over the expenses allegations.
The family refuses to comment on why he spent so much on office expenses, why he ran an office from home and what family members were on his payroll."
