UNISON to strike in Local Government

A good news story, this.

Well done to the UNISON LG members for voting to take escalating strike action. It is heartening for those of us in other parts of the public sector to see the largest group taking the initiative in fighting Brown's enforced pay cuts.

I hope and expect the action to widen and include other areas and other unions (UNITE and GMB in the health service are already moving in that direction, not to mention NUT and UCU, and CWU is gearing up for action again) if the government doesn't stop its stupid, immoral and economically illiterate policy of wage restraint in times of increasing inflation.

See you on the picket line, comrades.

Re: UNISON to strike in Local Government (#1)

Are T&G/Unite striking? For historical reasons that's my union, and I know GMB aren't planning to.

On the substantive, good. Darling keeps saying we have to have below inflation pay rises or interest rates will go up.

Since I've been careful, I have savings and not debts, so real-terms pay cuts and stupidly low interest rates punish me twice over.

Re: UNISON to strike in Local Government (#2)

I believe T&G in Local Government are balloting for action and recommending a Yes vote. It is rather a shame in hindsight that the GMB decided to essentially recommend acceptance to their members (and got it) leaving them isolated in the sector. I wonder if they are regretting it already, given the noises of "we will support our UNISON colleagues in any way we can" coming from national officer Brian Strutton yesterday.
