Michael Edwards Selected for South Derbyshire

Michael Edwards was selected yesterday as PPC for South Derbyshire. He's hardworking and a very active campaigner - it gives us the best chance of holding this very marginal seat. Congratulations to Mike.

Re: Michael Edwards Selected (#1)

He's going to seriously have his work cut out for him against Heather Wheeler, to be honest. Folks at least know of Heather as she leads the council and is regularly in the papers and on the local radio station.

Mr Edwards by comparison is from Nottingham, with the Tories fighting on more "local" [as used to be the case] terms these days, this may count seriously against him, and is more than likely to be exploited at least once during the campaign, whenever that may be.

Couple this with the local labour party being down on money as well as members, plus the disillusionment with Labour in general, and the fact that they managed to insult a lot of one part of the constituency with the "Weasels in suits" comment from the Gresley council by election [Labour held by just 123 votes] He's seriously going to have his work cut out for him.

I still question as to why nobody from the local Labour party stood though. There's easily some good MP material in the councilors and it blatantly works, look at how Ed Timpson, the local, fought a positive campaign and won.

More of that from Labour please.

Re: Michael Edwards Selected (#2)

Well, as a Tory you're bound to say that aren't you Angry Voter? Mike Edwards has a track record of defeating a Tory Leader when he took his council seat and I'm sure he's more than a match for Heather Wheeler. He is one of Labour's most hardworking campaigners - capable, experienced and dedicated.

I'm sure you want to concentrate on where candidates come from - Labour will stick to demonstrating that Mike Edwards will make a superb MP for South Derbyshire.

Re: Michael Edwards Selected (#3)

I'm say that Labour has burnt a couple of bridges locally with various events, there's a lot of disillusionment in this seat with politicians in general, but it seems to stem largely in Labour.

I just feel seriously dissapointed that not a single local member of the Labour Party stood.

Re: Michael Edwards Selected (#4)

AngryVoter, I have to agree with LabourStill. Mike has kept the Tories out of a seat that they regard as naturally theirs.

And you can keep banging on about local candidates, but that is just a spurious argument. The last Tory MP for the area was not local, and moved out pretty quick after losing the seat.

The questions you ask of a candidate for selection is can they connect with the activists and can they then connect with local voters? You might disagree with the choice, but a majority of local party members didn't
