I'm looking to the Fabians......

We need some radical new policies. And I think looking to the oldest, and in my opinion best British think-tank, the Fabian Society would be a good place to start.

Sunder Katwala recently suggested that we should abolish prescription charges.

Some interesting health reforms were suggested in their most recent review.

I think we need a set of radical proposals, and will outline several that I think we should introduce: what radical policies would you propose?

All have challenges but all are achievable:

Fund the BBC licence from income tax. What would be saved at a stroke in Magistrate courts and the administration of collecting the fee would be enormous. It is no longer hypothecated to watching a TV anyway. It should go as long as we could still guarantee public funding.

Fines, reprimands and bans
for local authorities who misuse of CCTV and anti-terror laws.

A legally binding local government charter
which sets out minimum standards for local authorities to achieve in service delivery.

Performance related pay for MPs
which is related to attendance, Bills introduced and, possibly, amount of case work taken on.

Fuel tax rebate
for petrol stations (who could really use the incentive) which introduce electric charging posts.

Re: I'm looking to the Fabians...... (#2)

I agree with all of those proposals.

The one which I can't find anyone on the left who would disagree with it would be universal childcare.

We need to go global, and lead an international effort to close tax havens.

We should demand that a global Manhatten project to find renewable energy sources be set up, with a windfall tax on the energy companies to start the first funds.

We should fight to scrap the CAP, and use the money to set up a, first European, then a global Marshall plan to protect the rainforests.
