Sleazy Spelman...Cont

John Lyon, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards has decided to investigate the tory party chairman, Caroline Spelman over the "nanny on the state" affair.

He did say that it would be EXCEPTIONAL to investigate a case more than 7 years old.

Spelman has to be finished; there is no doubt she will be found in breach of the rules. (she lied in her statement about the period of employ.....should be shocked? NO - its the tories!)

What will be interesting is how Cameron responds. He has been pretty quiet (read - SILENT) about her. Surely the tory party cant have someone continuing as chair when they are under investigation for graft?

Whats more ironic - is that Cameron is DITHERING; he should have got rid of her as soon as it was announced she was being investigated; but no, he didnt - he cant decide what is in the best interests of the party....get rid of her and give labour an easy PR day adding even more sleaze, or keep her and when she is finally disgraced, be forced to get rid of her - making him look weak.

They thought this was a non story as well.....

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#1)

I never believed this was a non story.  The minute I saw the Newsnight report on 6th June I knew it was all for Spellman.  I feel quite saddened that she's continuing the line she started with.  As a Tory I know once said, "It's not the crime that gets you, it's the cover up".

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#2)

What's interesting is the way in which the opinion polls are still overwhelmingly positive. It seems the juggernaught of the Cameron Project and hammering more positive news stories out seem to be keeping the electorate sweet. The newspapers don't seem too interested in a 7 year old story either. I've read 2 else 3 items from different papers on the matter, and about 15 on other Tory policies and Davis.

I think it's largely a non story and Cameron is letting the process run it's course rather than make snap decisions over events he wasn't even in Parliament to witness, hear about, or be able to do anything about.

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#3)

'sleazy' is not the word I would apply to Spelman; more like 'Mary Poppins making a silly decision, ten years ago'

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#4)

Totally agree with Swatantra - just silly, not sleazy

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#5)

You wouldn't be saying that if a Labour MP was involved.

According to ConHome, even 62% of Tory activists want her to step down.

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#6)

Sigh...!  I'd hope i'd have the good grace to recognise an innocent mistake whatever the party - as I would hope that you would too.

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#7)

Lets go for the Wintertons, Conways and the Spinks of this world and not for someone who stopped after she realized she was in error, a year later.

Re: Sleazy Spelman...Cont (#8)

After she realized it was error? She stopped the arrangement after the party whip pointed out that it might not look good.

But that's not really the point. How was this person suitable for the job, what qualifications did she posses and where was the appointment process? Or was it Spelman seeking to subsidise her child care arrangements. On the surface there is little substantive difference between the Winterton's actions or Spelman's.

These practices in other areas of the public sector would be unacceptable, they should be in Parliament.
