Tory Councillor in Northwest defects to Labour in support of 42 days

A senior Tory councillor in the northwest has defected to Labour.

He is opposed to the Tory opposition to the 42-day detention.

With the Sun showing the vast majority of the public also back the move...could this signal a shift, and show the 'rebels' that this issue could help both the country and the party?

Re: Tory Councillor in Northwest... (#1)

Extending the limit to 42 days will certainly not help the country. And it doesn't matter if 65% of people (if you believe the statistic) are behind the government on this, even if it will help us; we shouldn't be doing it.

I really hope no potential rebels decide to support the government just to make sure Gordon Brown can avoid further embarassment, or to 'help' the party in any way. As a member of the party, I really hope the measure is defeated, heavily if possible. I don't care what further trouble this might plunge us in to; the issue is too important for considerations like those.

Re: Tory Councillor defects (#2)

There was also all the bruhahaha over said Tory actually defecting over monetary issues also, infact the 42 Days plays a very small part. He's lost two of his jobs that were letting him claim the better part of £20k a year to do with the firefighting comittees because the Tories wouldn't let him stay on. So he defected.

Re: Tory Councillor in Northwest (#3)

I don't think some Tory jumping ship is cause to start praising this ludicruous proposal. 42 days is totally pointless. Who gives a toss what the Sun/Mail reading general public thinks, the fact that we have parliamentary democracy means that this decision should be made by parliament - not by the public.

And I think it's pretty cynical to claim it is worth doing this to boost Brown's support.

Re: Tory Councillor in Northwest (#4)

Must be a case of 'rats jumping onto a sinking ship'. The motive for his doing so is purely financial.

Re: Tory Councillor Northwest defects to Labour (#5)

If a Conservative is defecting to us because of 42 day detention, doesn't that just prove what a stupid, ill thought out and unnecessary policy it is?

I can't believe it! (#6)

What was the local Labour party thinking when they accepted this "lemon" of a councillor. It seems to me that they've done the local tories a massive favour.
