McDONNELL CHALLENGE FRONT PAGE NEWS

It's not often that the Left is front-page news but today's Mail On Sunday is seething with speculation that John McDonnell  MP is to mount another challenge to Gordon Brown.

The piece , alleging that "friends of the MP" have said he will try to topple Brown in the next few months, is curiously at odds with others alleging there will be no challenge from the Left as yet. So maybe the Mail is misinterpreting events.
But what is in no doubt is that Gordon Brown has been so damaged by the local election results it seems impossible he can continue until the next General Election. And the next few months are going to be absolutely fascinating politically - particularly for those of us who support the LRC.
Basically, around 100 or so MPs now know they have had it unless there is a change of leader - and policy direction back to Labour values  and democratic socialism.
The prospect of redundancy can sharpen minds wonderfuly and Ken Livingstone's demise in London will also have been a wake-up call to MPs hitherto , as John puts it, "sleepwalking to disaster." New Labour is dead and  it's  time to re-claim the Party. Bring it on.....

Re: McDONNELL CHALLENGE FRONT PAGE NEWS (#1)

If MPs are seriously worried about redundancy in all types of seats, won't that create real and deep tensions? MPs in working-class heartlands (often northern) will want rather different policies to MPs with "aspirational" seats (often southern). Could it get really nasty? Let's hope for better.

NB Reports are out that Frank Field will reopen the 10p issue, because of lack of clarity on how many will be compensated.

Re: McDONNELL CHALLENGE FRONT PAGE NEWS (#2)

I doubt this will happen now. McDonnell was on BBC News effectively saying that Brown had 6 months to turn things around or resign.

Re: McDONNELL CHALLENGE FRONT PAGE NEWS (#3)

Yes, just heardthat and I  did  suspect  the MoS was  bigging this up but my  real point is that the Labour left  is  now  in a  position where it can urge the Govt to change tack  or face  yet more humiliation and defeat. The time for fightback   has begun and as Gordon may go before the  next election  we need to ensure the  Calder Valley  resolution  on the leadership  gets through. That WOULD  mean we could  get the numbers to mount a left challenge and   kill off New labour. If we don't, we're talking Tory landlside at next election

Re: McDONNELL CHALLENGE FRONT PAGE NEWS (#4)

Brown is digging in a TV program now in Wales had Plaid, Tory, Lib Dem's who was missing Labour nobody available, this is what Labour now does it stops Labour people speaking, how silly.

???????????????

Re: McDONNELL CHALLENGE FRONT PAGE NEWS (#6)

The MoS story was always nonsense.  Who did they imagine John would be a stalking horse for?

The papers were all after a juicy Sunday headline.

I agree with Susan that it's illuminating that some of the papers 'looked left' for their headline.  But it was nothing more than a headline.
