Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#1)

and why not? He seems nice enough to me.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#2)

Charles Clarke without the amusing ears.

God preserve us.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#12)

Miliband, Milburn, Purnell, Clarke. RIP after next election. Along with New Labour

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#17)

You forgot Ruth Kelly. Bolton West will be looking very marginal come the next election!

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#20)

Yeh and along with Labour full stop.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#3)

He can't count on not getting my support.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#4)

Does that mean he can count on getting your support?

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#5)

I like Milburn, but he'll never be leader. Nothing to take seriously here.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#6)

I think Milburn has used up his Political capital already with the silly 20/20 vision launch last year.   Next Leadership election will be 2010 and I expect it to be Miliband against Purnell.  I expect Balls will rue his "Who Cares" boast in the commons.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#8)

I disagree with you regarding 20/20 vision.  The website gave many of us a wonderful opportunity to contribute to various policy issues and was one of the best discussion sites at the time.  I learnt an awful lot from informed commentators on issues which affect us all such as globalisation, the role of the state etc etc.  Sadly, there is no comparable website available to us now regarding policy debates.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#10)

Policy discussion is a wonderful thing but let's face it the 20/20 was just a way of trying to rain on Gordon's parade by the same people that complained of Gordon doing the same to Tony.   When Milburn stops making thinly veiled pot shots at Brown maybe he'll become Leadership material

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#7)

I  like Alan Milburn.  He is forward thinking, a political heavy weight and has some excellent ideas on how the party needs to renew itself at the present time.  I thought his recent interviews  (they are on his website)were enlightening.  I think he would be an excellent leader.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#9)

He has some good qualities and could try his chances if the opportunity arises.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#11)

I assume this is a joke.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#13)

Alan Milburn is very rightwing - an ultra Blairite. In my view he makes Gordon Brown look like a real socialist. There is no way that someone like Milburn could unite the Labour Party. What is the policy difference between Alan Milburn and David Cameron...? Maybe that Cameron is more socially liberal.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#18)

It's funny because it's true.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#14)

He could hardly be worse than the current incumbent.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#15)

Personally I think Alan Milburn would be very much worse. He would be completely indistinguishable from Cameron and Clegg in terms of policy.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#16)

Depressingly, you are absolutely correct.

Re: Alan Milburn for Leader? (#19)

Millburn is not the answer to our problems
