We now intend to go further and ensure no child has to face selective entry tests for secondary education (except banding) by ending selection on ability and aptitude.

However many English children continue to face overt selective entry tests on ability and aptitude in order to transfer to secondary education. We intend to commission a wide ranging study on how this affects children, families, schools and educational attainment. The study should include the question of changing the current rules for a local ballot so that all parents in the area get a vote.

We will also continue to support and promote the vital community role of Further Education colleges in providing a general education through A Levels, GCSEs, Diplomas and the full range of academic and vocational courses for post-16 adult learners.
