Hoey makes statement to members of Vauxhall CLP

Vauxhall MP Kate Hoey has released a statement to members of Vauxhall CLP regarding her appointment by the Mayor Boris Johnson and the controversy surrounding the announcement during the election campaign

Johnson today announced that Hoey would be Commissioner for Sport - see http://www.london.gov.uk/view_press_release.jsp?releaseid=16913

This is her statement to Vauxhall members

Thursday 15th May 2008
Dear Member of Vauxhall Labour Party,
The Members of this Party are its lifeblood and so I wanted you to be the first to know that I have now agreed to be the Mayor of London's Commissioner for Sport.

I have been asked to develop the London legacy plan for sport arising from the unique opportunity that the 2012 Olympics gives us, and to help increase grass roots sport participation and access to sporting opportunities across London.

As you may know, for my whole political life I have been passionate about seeing that the power of sport be used to change the lives of our young people.  Sport crosses all political divides and just as the Prime Minister appointed non-Labour MPs to advise on issues such as housing, I too feel that on some issues the "big tent" approach to politics is in all our interests.

I will not, of course, be involved with any other aspect of the Mayor's administration and nor would I ever want to be.  I do see substantial benefits for this and neighbouring constituencies and am confident that I can make a difference in this unpaid role.

Of course just like a Minister, my duties and responsibilities as a Labour MP will always come first.  I look forward to explaining this in more detail either at a ward meeting or at the GC but as I said, I wanted you to be the first to hear the formal news today.

On a personal note, I would add that I am all too aware of how this news first came out and how upset some of you were and are.  It is a matter of deep regret to me.  I share your sorrow at the loss of the Mayoralty.  In campaigning across the constituency I saw just how hard so many of you were working.

But we are now where we are and I know that the people who elected me to serve in Parliament are very supportive of politicians from different parties working together for the common good.  Our challenge in Labour is to work together in the coming years to win for Labour in Europe, again in Lambeth in 2010, and after again in Parliament.  I look forward to serving you, and working with you.

Best wishes & see you soon.  Please do email me or call me if you would like to discuss this issue further - I would be delighted to hear from you.
Kate

Hmm... I'm not sure if this will be acceptable to all Vauxhall members - it will be an interesting GC in two weeks' time!

Re: Hoey (#1)

This is disappointing.

Re: Hoey (#2)

People who dont like Hoey will find this disappointing. Anyone else looking dispassionately at it will wonder what the fuss is about.

Re: Hoey (#3)

I'm not very impressed with this at all.

She claims that she wanted the members of Vauxhall Labour Party to be "the first to know" about this news, although the letter is dated the same day as the press release! This letter also glosses over the fact that the news first came out 2 days before a local election! Rules are rules, and by letting this news leak on 29th April Kate Hoey effectively broke them.

I also saw on BBC London News that Boris Johnson is dropping Ken Livingstone's theme of using the 2012 Olympics to regenerate the East End! How can this Labour MP work for this man?! By working for him she is failing London.

Re: Hoey (#5)

Exactly, Johnson showed his true colours here by turning his back on regeneration.

Re: Hoey (#10)

She agreed to work for a Conservative in the middle of a tight election against a popular Labour incumbent.

Nope, nothing to see here, I guess?

Re: Hoey (#11)

popular labour incumbent? He lost - and by a comprehensive margin!

Re: Hoey makes statement to members (#4)

"People who dont like Hoey will find this disappointing. Anyone else looking dispassionately at it will wonder what the fuss is about."

Well, I don't especially dislike Hoey but I do find this disappointing.

Firstly because she allowed the original announcement to come out during the campaign and secondly because her suggestion that this just like the PM getting advice from non-Labour MPs is highly disengenuous.

It is comparable with Brown's attempts to appoint Paddy Ashdown as a Minister, which both he and his party turned down.

Re: Hoey makes statement (#6)

Everthing Hoey does is designed to damage Labour (shes chair of the so called Countryside Alliance which has but one aim and here is a clue, it isnt a Labour government staying in power!),  shes the ultimate fith columnist, we should be rid of her and quickly.

Re: Hoey makes statement to members of (#7)

I used to have a mixed opinion of Hoey. On the one hand her leftist stance on some issues I found appealing, but her support of fox hunting is bizarre. This latest thing makes a mockery her and the Labour Party. Labour needs a new candidate, preferably from the left or soft left - not a Blairite/Brownite stooge.

Re: Hoey makes statement to members of (#8)

Completely agree.

What a Katoey (#9)

In Thailand, a "katoey" is the local term for a lady-boy. Fascinating fact of the day.

 Still love her, though!

Johnson blocking regeneration (#12)

The Tory Mayor of London can say anything he likes on any subject. He won't be making any unilateral decisions and the Olympic Park land belongs to the Olympic Development Authority.

I'm seeing at huge public transport projects already on site. £104m works at Stratford station, to be finished and in use two years before the games, is the most obvious example. There are also the increase in size of DLR trains by half, new DLR destinations to Woolwich and to Stratford International, upgrades to the North London Line and the new East London line.

The Tory mayor cannot stop any of that. Where we should be looking for trouble is over affordable housing and opportunities for local people to learn new skills and earn a better living.

Re: Hoey makes statement to members of Vauxhall (#13)

Returning to Ms Hoey - there is a Vauxhall Labour Party General Committee meeting tonight at which this matter will be discussed.

By my reckoning there are three or four motions from wards ranging from expressing concern about the announcement and asking her not to speak out against Labour in the future to requests to refer the matter higher up the party for disciplinary action.

As a GC delegate I have been contacted by people who never normally attend GCs and asked my opinions on this and to promote support for the anti-Hoey motions

It will be an interesting meeting tonight...

Re: Hoey makes statement to members of Vauxhall (#14)

any feedback Mr Lambeth Life?

Re: Hoey makes statement to members of Vauxhall (#15)
