BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates

The BNP are fiedling a record 10 candidates in St Helens for the locals.  They have only previously put up one or two candidates.  I am sure that this concerns us all as St Helens could be taken back into Labour control this time.  We are leafleting on the 12 and 13.  Please contact me on JWis221300@aol.com.  If you can help.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#1)

I take it St Helens a well off community then, otherwise what makes you think anyone would vote new labour right now, I would not. we have a few BNP people standing in my area, sadly they are sounding the best party in my area, my Labour party are telling us not to return to the Thatcher years, for god sake she is living on pills she is nearly dead, we cannot return to the Thatcher years.

I mean if we have nothing more to offer then Thatcher what a poor state.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#3)

John is raising a serious issue here. I am bemused by your views. St Helens is not a well off community by the way.
If you are right then should we give up and let the fascists fill the vacuum?  I'm sure we are all interested in what you think we should be doing, as you think the BNP  "are sounding the best party." What is good about the politics of hate, fear and resentment? Unless of course you feel they "speak for the silent majority" as I overheard a BNP activist say to his chum at the count in St Helens last year??

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#4)

You don't like Labour anymore, so therefore you turn to the BNP? Utterly ridiculous.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#6)

I think this rather confirms what I've been saying on the other thread...NM, we can't just expect people to keep paying in and getting nothing back in return. Indeed, if  there's anything else like this 10p tax thing, I may very well call it a day - there's only so much we can be expected to take.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#7)

If we are just on about ordinary Party members, the statement "paying in and getting nothing back in return" is frankly laughable.

Have I imagined the National Minimum Wage?  Are the most significant pieces of equality legislation ever a mere figment of my imagination?  Is the end of terrorist atrocities in Northern Ireland a dream?  Which other country has been told by the United Nations that it leads the way in tackling climate change?

Everything in the garden is far from rosy, but to suggest, as you do with that comment, that everything is manure, is bizarre.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#8)

But after 10 years of Labour govt, society should be more equal in all senses: it is not. That is a complete and utter indictment of New Labour. We have made no radical changes to society: fewer people now favour increased taxation on the rich to deal with poverty, for instance. I'm not for a minute deriding our achievements, but anyone who thinks New Labour has put our supporters first over the past decade is living in a fantasy world: we get the crumbs left over once the city and the rich have been appeased. That's not good enough.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#9)

I don't think NM was saying being disillusioned with the government was 'utterly ridiculous', he was saying considering transferring one's support from the main centre-left party to a Nazi party was 'utterly ridiculous'.

I assume when you say you may 'very well call it a day', you're not planning on voting Nazi?

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#10)

No, of course not Dunc - it's Labour or nothing for me.  I'm not trying to excuse voting BNP, I'm just desperate for us to address the underlying issues, instead of simply condemning them - these are not 'evil' people, and suggesting they are is totally wrong.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#11)

I agree we have to address the genuine grievances of some people who are finding themselves drawn towards the BNP (though I stress that should not involve conceding any ground to the BNP AT ALL) but that can't be the whole answer.  I agree, the voters we're referring to are not evil people, so they shouldn't be considering voting for an evil party.  Therefore, exposing the evil of the party is important.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#12)

Well, as I said on the other thread, I think there are very strong social justice arguments against mass within-EU immigration. But I don't think that'd be conceding ground, so much as recognising what the most just distribution of scarce resources should be.  Please don't think I'm against campaigning against the BNP, that's extremely valuable, but the real solution is in tackling disaffection with Labour and politics generally.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#2)

No matter how bad things get the BNP will never, repeat be anything other than a group of bigots and thugs.

John - I am in St Helens on the morning of April 23rd with work and could spare an hour or so for leafleting or door knocking in the afternoon if that is any good.

Re: BNP target St Helens with 10 candidates (#5)

For the record we also have 10 BNP candidates in Stoke-on-Trent, plus two ex-BNP candidates (one a sitting Councillor defending his seat).  BNP gains in three Wards - Abbey Green, Bentilee and Townsend and Weston and Meir North - will give them all three Councillor in those Wards.
