Boris campaign slates 24 hour freedom pass
Older Londoners were left holding their freedom passes tight as Boris's Johnson's latest endorsement fuelled fears that he would snatch away Ken's promised 24 hour freedom pass, if elected.
The Johnson campaign have been denying their opposition to the new 24 hour Freedom Pass, but the Linton Crosby inspired mask appears to have slipped.
Boris Johnson's campaign today unveiled the support of Brian Cooke of travelwatch.
The endorsement was launched on the Boris Johnson website, in an official campaign release. That release slated the planned 24 hour extension to the much cherished Freedom Pass for older Londoners.
In the statement, Cooke confirmed that he was in agreement with all of Johnson's transport policies on everything except for his plans to ditch bendy buses.
Cooke then launched into a blistering attack on the 24 hour Freedom Pass, calling it "plain daft" and "totally crazy".
The high profile Boris backer's statement reads:
"I can’t wait to get my freedom pass but allowing people to use it before 0900 will only make London's very crowded transport system even worse. Many people over 60 still work why should they be subsidised by all other fare payers and at the same time make transport system even more crowded and more uncomfortable for those that will be paying to subsidise the others. I think that plain daft. If current patronage on Tube, Rail and Tram in particular carries on growing at the current rate the planned expansion won’t cope anyway and to subsidise more people at the most crowded time seems totally crazy."
Update [2008-4-28 15:42:6 by boriswatch]: Clearly worried about Londoners' reaction to this attack on the freedom pass, the Boris campaign have removed the press release. However, you can still find it here.
