Super Rich get richer

...under Labour

The UK's super-rich have never been richer, according to this year's Sunday Times Rich List.

The top 1,000 richest people in the country now have more than £400bn between them, it estimates - up almost £53bn in the last year....."However, much of the rise in this year's wealth can be attributed to one factor: the number of foreign rich who have made London or its environs the main home and base of operation."

Of course that's geat for the economy isn't it - I mean tax at 25% on this lot will haul in £100Bn a year - won't it? ;-)

Re: Super Rich get richer (#1)

For many voters, the more they see the rich getting richer, and the poor getting (apparently) shafted, the more they'll think 'they are all the same', the more the personality of the leaders will become important.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#2)

I cannot believe anyone would say that.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#3)

I don't care one iota how rich the rich get, and neither should anyone else. It's how the poor are doing which counts.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#5)

Just so NM - and what has GB done - scrapped the 10p start rate.
And I thought labour stood up for the working man

Re: Super Rich get richer (#6)

But the rich getting richer normally corresponds to the poor getting poorer. And there is a difference between wealthy people and those with all the money!

Re: Super Rich get richer (#7)

relative poverty is almost as important as absolute poverty.

absolute poverty matters for obvious reasons.

relative pocerty matters for rather more subtle reasons. if those at the top move so far ahead of the rest of us, we will surley reach a point where they are so far ahead that they cease to be part of us and our society. we then have total dislocation in our society. where those at the front are so far ahead of the rest of us that they cease to share any commonality with us. then we have societial breakdown.

the rich cannot move too far ahead, as then they will move too far away to be part of us anymore. they will simply become part of the international rich, i suppose if i am feeling rather radical you could call it the international mega bourgeoisie! ; )

Everyone in our society matters. especially the worse off.

poverty is the fundamental question of our age. - both at home and abroad. every other issue links into it in one way or another. If we on the left cannot win the argument and provide the solutions to such problems, they we truly are doomed, as are the poorest.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#12)

My point was the amount of tax we *could* be getting....

Re: Super Rich get richer (#13)

But, would you not agree, that not taxing them efficiently, is a national scandal, that negates the idea of redistriubtion of wealth?

Re: Super Rich get richer (#14)

Yes I agree with that. I don't care how big rich people's salaries are, but they should pay their fair share of tax without exploiting loopholes.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#15)

Absolutely, jkitleft.  The arguments about making the UK a haven for the very rich just don't hold water.  Their cash is not circulating in our economy and we get no revenue from them.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#4)

Well we are not doing so well under this Labour party, better then the Tories your going to say well not the way things are going up. Prices are rising but sadly for me my benefits are going down. I hear it now get a  job you lazy git, well sadly I have just gone through the pathways to work new regime to be told my disability means I'll not be called again.

Seems no legs still make me disabled beyond the work ethics of employers. So back to doing voluntary work.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#8)

But on the other thread, you were complaining that the government was forcing you into work!

You can't have it both ways treborc.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#9)

They may well have been forcing him into unsuitable work, or into the arms of employers who just won't accept disabled people due to prejudice. Either way, it's State coercion of the weak and vulnerable.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#10)

I imagine that treborc is probably being forced into work when there are no employers willing to even consider accepting him.

Re: Super Rich get richer (#11)

It is sad that people think all disabled sit down all day, well I do OK I have to, it's called a wheelchair.

I've spent four years of looking for work and have yet to find one offer, each week I spend two hours twice a week at the job center, I spent hours writing letters.

I do not normally tell people this but here goes, my accident in 1990 was all over TV radio it was called a major incident, the fire service air sea rescue all involved.

I fell 96 landing on my feet, I broke almost everything you can name spent eighteen months laying in hospital with traction pulling my body back into shape.

But thats nothing I damaged my spinal cord, again bad but I can cope, the problems are I damaged my liver my kidneys my bowel and my bladder pushing everything high up into my body cavity, I was having pints and pints of blood pumped into me and was urinating them back out. I was so near to death. Then I had MRSA which affected my legs badly and they are now a waste of space.

But believe it or not I love the social interaction of working with people sitting at home looking at a computer is not what I want.

But lets get this straight I live each day as it comes, not thinking about tomorrow it might not come, my liver problems are now called acute.

IN October of 2008 I will have a new medical which will ask me to move a computer mouse, it can be with a finger, my nose or my penis, if I can move that mouse and put a pointer on a computer screen into a box, everyone who can do this will be deemed able to work.

Does not matter if you have no legs no arms you will get Job seekers allowance and your benefits will drop from £87 a week to £57 a week, but I will still have no job.

Thats the sad thing this is about benefit cuts not getting people back to work.

We disabled people are now seen as the reason for all the woes of the world, we are all benefits frauds, or swindling or getting everything for free.

One lady once asked me how do you live with your self you get free cars, free electric, free gas, free water, she said I get nothing.

I get nothing free at all I pay for everything because my benefits incapacity benefits is not means tested, and all I get is £87 a week not £300 ==£87.
