Support our Local Government Candidates!

In the face of multiple posts about 10p Tax Bands, the economy, striking teachers and refinery workers, I think we should spend a minute to support our Councillors and candidates for next weeks Local Elections.

Across the country Labour Cllrs and candidates are up for election - they may be defending their record in charge, or exposing the inefficiencies of Tory or Lib Dem (or possibly ConDem!) councils.

I know that people like to use any election as an attempt to bash the parties on national issues, but up and down the country, Labour councils and Cllrs are making a difference to their communities - no matter what is happing in national politics. Indeed, they are also exposing stunning Tory incompetence, and an attitude in some areas at odds with how Cameron would like his party to be viewed...

I'm not naive - but I would like to see Local Elections fought on Local issues. Its what the people deserve if they are ever to be able to engage fully in Local, day to day politics.

Good luck to all Labour candidates and Cllrs across the country this coming Thursday

On the other hand they may also be a waste of space, the one thing new Labour has taught me is to vote for the people you think are best qualified or just better at doing a job. Until Blair I voted Labour, Labour councilors Labour MPs Labour candidates, I just voted Labour, now I look more at the people who will work or help us, and to be honest in my area it has to be independents.

Many other Labour people in my area feel the same, normally an ex mining area which three years ago lost a big employer when no funding could be found, the government said it could not help due to EU rules, seems these rules do not count for Banks.

Good luck to every Labour candidate standing for election next week!

Re: Support our Local Government Candidates! (#3)

Yes, good luck to all of them - it's going to be a tough ride.

Re: Support our Local Government Candidates! (#4)

Just back from a day's good campaigning.  The reception wasn't too bad to be honest.  A few hostile responses, but quite a lot of interest too.  I don't sense an out-and-out mauling...

Re: Support our Local Government Candidates! (#5)

No well I think the Labour safe seats will be Labour safe seats, my area which has been Labour since 1900 is now an independent

Re: Support our Local Government Candidates! (#6)

Good luck to all.  In the North West look out for the following councils

Barrow - school issue
Rochdale - split Lib-Dems
St Helens - we have a chance of winning the council back with good results, but the BNP are raising their heads
Warrington - Can Labour take back control?
Liverpool - can Labour take more seats and move towards the Lib Dem total?  I hope
Blackburn & Burnley - Can Labour re-take control??
