Boris takes tobacco cash, seeks to undermine smoking ban

In a webchat on the Sun, Boris Johnson announced a new policy that would undermine the smoking ban in public places after taking thousands of pounds in tobacco lobbyist cash.

Talking during the webchat, the Henley MP said he “would have an online referendum in London about whether to give boroughs back the power to give discretion over smoking to pubs and clubs.”

It has also emerged that Boris gave a paid speech to the Association of Tobacco.  The price tag for his talks is between £5,001 and £10,000.

Johnson has spoken out for big tobacco in Parliament, voting against banning tobacco advertising and he voted against the ban on smoking in public places.

The Tory mayoral hopeful hasn’t yet outlined how such an online referendum would be run fairly or how it would comply with existing legislation.
