Boris Johnson to bring back smoking in pubs and clubs!

Boris Johnson has now pledged to hold 'online' referendums on whether to let boroughs allow smoking.

Firstly, how can an online referendum ever be representative?

And personally, I am totally outraged about the possibility of rolling back one of the very important changes which has made it far more pleasant to go out for a pint in the evening or dance the night away, without coming back smelling like an ashtray.

I'd boycott any club that did allow smoking.

And what about the health and welfare of those who work in the industry?

Re: Boris Johnson (#1)

I was against the blanket ban on smoking but how could boroughs overrule a national law prohibiting it?

Re: smoking in pubs and clubs (#2)

I personally believe that only 50% covering should be necessary, so that those in say, bus stops and train stations could smoke. Shisha bars, Cigar bars, Tobbaconists etc. should be exempted. But I think that like organ donation, we should have an opt-out system.

So, essentially, there would be a yearly fine on allowing clubs, bars and restaurants (but the ban in hospitals and offices should be a blanket ban) to have smoking on their premises. If it was a national corporation, they would pay a larger amount, for each premise, and a smaller business would pay a smaller rate. If they didn't allow smoking, they should build adequate places for smokers to light up. For instance, in Italy, they have canopes at every restaurant, cafe etc. In Australia, outside every club, bar etc. they have adequate places to stub out cigarettes. We could certainly learn from this, as I saw absolutely no litter when I was in Australia for a month.

However, I certainly don't support internet referendums repealing laws of the kingdom, that should be left to either national referendums or Parliament. (I would personally prefer to see the smoking ban law, as a law of the republic, rather than kingdom).

Re: Boris Johnson to bring back smoking (#3)

I fully support the public smoking ban and thankfully, if Johnson is elected he won't have the power to overturn it.

If is he does do his silly online referendums, nobody should take any notice of them because the only people who will bother voting on them will be the pro-cancer fanatics.

Re: Boris Johnson to bring back smoking (#4)

please don't say pro-cancer, because I get really angry, for instance, if someone describes me as pro-abortion.
