The death of the labour party?

Rule changes agreed last year regarding female candidate selections in local government elections are having a damaging effect on local parties. This rule is far more divisive and destructive than anything I have seen for a long time.

Congress passed a rule last year stating that all winnable local election seats should be contested by at least 50% women. In my area this has led to hard working and previously loyal male councillors being deselected and replaced by, in some instances, candidates with little or no support within the local branch. We've already seen some councillors go independent, others will no doubt sit on their hands when it comes to delivering the leaflets and I wouldn't want to be a candidate in Easington where the whole CLP has been suspended! This rule may well have been borne of good intentions but its effect so far has been to deplete still further our diminishing ranks. MP's,ministers and the NEC need to sit up and take notice of this rule and get it changed before our core goes below a sustainable level!

Which "congress" passed this? I do not believe you're a Labour party member.

Re: The death of the labour party? (#2)

Do a bit of research before casting your accusations. The Easington story's even been on this site before.

Death of the Labour party?

Nice to see nobody has resorted to using severe doom-and-gloom exaggerations.

Re: The death of the labour party? (#4)

'In my area this has led to hard working and previously loyal male councillors being deselected'.

This I find hard to believe.  All the NEc guidelines that I have seen on AWS, specifically rule out 'deselecting' incumbent male councillors.

And, on what basis has the 'whole of Easington CLP' been suspended?

Excuse my scepticism, but the story doesn't ring true.

Re: The death of the labour party? (#8)

You are right in that the guidelines rule out deselecting sitting Labour councillors, but since County Durham is moving to a new unitary authority structure, the party deemed that there are no sitting councillors for this election. Therefore half of all winnable seats were marked for AWS.

Re: The death of the labour party? (#9)

Ah! Thank you Henry, this information makes the position clearer.  In that case, I have some sympathy for those who feel that they are being pushed out by the new set-up.  Mind you, if a new local authority is being created, it is difficult to see what else the Party can do in the face of all these conflicting demands i.e. councillors who feel they do have incumbency, AWS and, usually, some new people.  If now is not the time to start with a clean sheet, then when?

Re: The death of the labour party? (#11)

I don't want to get too much into this debate this side of the election, but I will point out that the women that have been selected have been disproportionately of pensionable age. They are not bright young things who will new ideas and skills into the council that some would hope for or imagine.  They are being selected for their gender and all other issues are playing a secondary role.

Re: The death of the labour party? (#5)

"previously loyal male councillors...went independent". Hmmn. An interesting example of loyalty.

My scepticism is not much diminished.

I admit I've never heard of the 'Though Cowards Flinch' blogsite before and wonder whether this story is actually an attempt to raise its profile?  Which left wing newspaper is behind this one?
