Iraq Quiz

Just now I have come across the following (timely?) quote which I pose as a quiz to Labourhome's ultra-knowledgeable readership. Can you guess who said it?

"When Iraq becomes strong enough in our opinion to stand alone, we shall be in a position to state that our task has been fulfilled, and that Iraq is an independent sovereign state. But this cannot be said while we are forced year after year to spend very large sums of money on helping the Iraqi government to defend itself and maintain order."

Re: Iraq Quiz (#1)

I'm going to take a guess at Winston Churchill.

Re: Iraq Quiz (#2)

It was Churchill.

I'd dispute his analysis though. I wonder whether he regarded Britain as less that an independent sovereign state during the time that the US was sending large sums of money (and soldiers, weapons and the rest) to help defend this country from the Nazis? I rather think not.

Re: Iraq Quiz (#3)

When did he say it?  Before or after he ordered "Chemical Harris" to gas the Kurds?

The greatest ever Briton...

Re: Iraq Quiz (#4)

I’m impressed with the scholarship of Labourhome readers! Churchill said it in 1922. How do you folks get to know it?!

Anyway, the reason it surprised me and I posted it was that it shows we haven’t learnt anything from history and are repeating the same mistakes! And we will repeat it in future too, because we are not sincere in learning from our mistakes. So it’s hogwash for Brown to agree with the Fabian general secretary Katwala that there will be an inquiry later to learn the lessons, when he seemingly is pre-empting the findings by saying it’s good riddance, Saddam!
