Worrying London election reporting from BBC

Ken’s had some pretty poor reporting in sections of the London press so far, so it’s a bit of a worry that the BBC appears to be following with some dodgy coverage of Ken’s bid for re-election.

Take today’s interview of Ken by Adam Boulton on Sky.  Ken repeated what he had said before – that bendy buses have been popular where they’ve been brought in, but they’re only needed on a few busy routes, so there’s no plan to extend it further.

This has now been followed up on the BBC as a u-turn story, saying he’s declared no more bendy buses.  There were never going to be any more – but it’s linked under the headline “Mayor to dump bendy buses”.

Then there’s the reporting of the £100 million hole in Boris Johnson’s transport plan. It’s barely been covered on BBC news.   A huge planning gaffe that independent experts have verified has gone virtually unnoticed on the beeb.  That should have been a major election issue this week.

Indeed, the only reference that I can find to it is this article by Tim Donovan, where he’s doing his best to report it as six of one and half a dozen of the other – after a gratuitous reference to Lee Jasper to measure.

Tim Donovan does seem to be a particular problem .  In the latest Politics Show, he had Iain Dale of all people presented as some kind of independent expert.  Dale got a super soft interview as if he were a pundit, not a Tory activist and sometime parliamentary candidate.

I’m a big fan of the BBC, I really am, but some BBC staff do get it wrong from time to time. This is starting to look one of those cases. If that happens it’s serious. The BBC is probably the most trusted source of information in the race to decide one of the most important jobs in the country.  That is too important for bias to get in the way.

Good points Graham. Unfortunately, I think the media want Boris to win because they know they'll get so many good stories to write about with him in charge.

I just hope your average Londoner is a bit more rational when it comes to voting in elected representatives.

Re: Worrying London election reporting from BBC (#2)

I just cannot believe it! That a few outings on HIGNFY as Chair, and Johnson made a total b**ls up of it, can qualify him for Mayor. I even know Labour supports who think that Johnson 'is a good chap'.
Ken unfortunately is losing out on the 'likability' stakes big time. He needs to cultivate the 'I am the real Londoner' image. Pie n mash, jellied eels and a few photo opps with pearly kings/queens, and be seen to be doing the Lambeth Walk. Its going to be tough going. I said it could all end in tears. Always quit while your ahead. That's why 2 Terms is suffient for anyone.

Re: Worrying London election reporting from BBC (#5)

I'm as astonished as you are that Boris is so popular. I really cannot believe that people are daft enough to consider Boris as a 'likeable' chap given his repulsive views that have been shown in his articles over the years.

To be honest, I think Ken was the right person to be our candidate for this election - he's done a great job over the past 8 years and people generally recognise him as bold, radical and a man of the people.

And yet he's 12 points behind in the latest poll! It's makes you despair of democracy.

Re: Worrying London election reporting from BBC (#3)

The conservative end of the blogosphere has been making much of supposed bias at the BBC towards the left. I do wonder whether Auntie Beeb is making a conscious decision to be plus royaliste que le roi.

There seems to have been precious little coverage, for instance, of the gaps in Johnson's transport budget and barely any mention at all of Brian Paddick.

Re: Worrying London election reporting from BBC (#4)

Wow - is this the same BBC some of whose employees gave the number 10 press office user names and passwords to get on to various BBC closed networks so they could have prior knowledge of stories and prepare the lines to take.

Evidence?

Don't worry

Re: Worrying London election reporting from BBC (#8)

Phew!  Just saw the date on the OP.  Early March.  Well, I don't need to say then, that the central worry here was unnecessary.
