A ten million dollar note has been issued - its worth £1and by next month it will be worth 50p.

Inflation now 100,000%

The next Presidential elections are due to be held in 2008, although Mugabe is currently trying to amend the constitution in an attempt to stay in power until 2010.

Re: Zimbabwe - a triumph for Robert Mugabe (#1)

Surely he wont be in power for much longer? There must come a point where everyone has had enough. Although of course the country has been at economic crisis point for 5 years or so.

Re: Zimbabwe - a triumph for Robert Mugabe (#2)

My fear is that if and when Mugabe goes the country will descend into a bloody civil war during which all the remaining economically productive facilities will be destroyed.

Is there not a role for South Africa / the African Union / the United Nations to manage an orderly move towards multiparty elections

Re: Zimbabwe - a triumph for Robert Mugabe (#3)

Sadly, even the opposition MDC is a house divided against itself.

Shame on them and shame on Mbeki for not having the moral backbone to speak out more publicly.

We should have demanded Portugal arrest Mugabe - Pinochet style - when he was at the Lisbon summit,  based on reports filed by victims of his regime.
