Treasurership: Nominations open

All CLPs and national affilated organisations have now been sent their NEC nomination forms, which include the position of Treasurer of the Labour Party. The editorial team at Labourhome.org is backing one of our own, Mark McDonald, a human rights barrister and former NUPE shop steward.

We're not just backing Mark to win, we need him to take a powerful mandate to the NEC to enable him to raise the bar on the party's compliance with its financial obligations.

So we're asking you, today, to email your CLP secretary, and your unions and affiliates, to ask them to nominate Mark for this position.

This isn't an attack on Jack Dromey, who has held the post for four years. Neither is Mark's candidacy a confrontation with the party hierarchy.

Yet it is meant as an illustration to the party that it can benefit from the constructive co-operation of regular party members at every level.

With Mark's diligence, talent and hard work, we will all benefit.

Grassroots members will benefit from the reduced likelihood of their activism being negated by small, high profile mistakes at the centre of the party.

The upper echelons will benefit from fewer media hits derailing attention from a focus on government and policy.

The union movement will benefit from a clear voice on the NEC mandated to ensure that party spending is as diligently scrutinised as party fundraising and that their valuable contributions are not wasted.

And we will all benefit from a greater confidence from donors that they will be appreciated for what they are and that there will be no undue benefit or drawback from their support. Donors large and small generally seek our gratitude, not our favours.

If you are prepared to support Mark, you will find his statement and contact details here.

Apart from Jack and Mark, I haven't heard of any other candidates seeking nominations for this post, but in the spirit of Labourhome, all are welcome to use these pages to promote their candidacies.

Please do contact your CLP secretary as soon as possible, and of course let us know if your CLP or affilated organisation votes to back Mark.

If you can help us organise this campaign, please get in touch and your support will be doubly welcome.

Many thanks,

Re: Treasurerhip: Nominations open (#1)

Competition is always a good thing and the incumbent should welcome the challenge. As for Mark, he's a top quality candidate, decent bloke and crucially a grassroots figure which I think is what we need at this juncture to restore faith in poltics in general and Labour politics specifically which has had a rocky ride somewhat. I'm enthusiastically backing his candidacy all the way.

Re: Treasurerhip: Nominations open (#2)

We always talk about re-connecting the party to its grassroots and this is an opportunity to do just that. Mark has strong ideas about how the governance system can be strengthened and what could be done better in areas like fundraising but it's important that you use your voice as well.

This site will be a forum for you making points and asking questions that Mark will answer, now and if elected. He will also attend as many party constituency meetings as you invite him to, to ensure the party is run in your interests, rather than from an ivory tower in Westminster.

One last thing, if you want to demonstrate to the party and the media that there is a movement behind this, then please sign up to the Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9117791206 and please please tell your friends about it:)

Re: Treasurerhip: Nominations open (#3)

Good luck. We need someone as Treasurer who knows whats going on and, if they don't, can find out.

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#4)

Do we know the closing date?

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#5)

Nominations have to be back to the party by 1st April.

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#6)

Good luck Mark. I think Jack Dromey has had a decent 4 year stint; time for a change.

Any news on the Tribune article claim that NEC members could be personally liable for the debts of the party, by virtue of their trustee status? That should be of concern for NEC candidates, especially for Treasurer.

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#7)

Good luck, Mark!

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#10)

I completely support Mark for treasurer. I too am a barrister; and I know him to have the highest ethical and professional standards.

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#8)

Has everyone contacted their CLP Secretaries asking them to put Mark's nomination on their next agenda?

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#9)

Dear Alex

Mark kindly responded to my post about good governance on my own blog. I'm asking him about his views on the LabOUR Commission Interim Report before deciding about the merits of his candidacy.

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#11)

Why are you still flagging up the issue of the treasurer? Apparently the NEC shortlisted for the position of General Dogsbody at head office yesterday. Anybody know what the competition is?

Re: Treasurership: Nominations open (#12)

He has got Northampton Souths nomination.
