Streatham shortlist announced

The shortlist for Streatham has been announced:

The shortlist is

Steve Reed Lambeth Council leader

Cathy Ashley - former Lambeth councillor (?), charity chief executive

Chuka Umunna - Vice Chair Streatham CLP, lawyer

Dora Dixon-Fyle - Southwark Councillor, former actor

Naz Sarkar -  Labour Councillor in Walthamstow, teacher at Dunraven School Streatham

So all the other current Lambeth councillors havent been selected (at one point it seemed like all those serving in the streatham clp area had their hats in the ring!)

Does anyone know whos the front runner? Any further info?

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#1)

Obviously I can’t be certain who’s going to win. But although Chuka blitzed through the shortlist stage and Steve Reed had to rely on Brixton & Streatham Hill, I wonder if it will be replicated in the final voting.

I’ve a feeling that Reed suffered a bit from being considered the frontrunner before, but will perform more strongly at the next stage.

Any of those in the shortlist would make an excellent candidate though in my opinion.

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#2)

From what I have seen from the Vauxhall end of the borough they do indeed all look good however I'm not overly keen on Chuka Umunna's apparent stress on how local he is and how he has never left Streatham apart from when at university - that to me is a weakness not a strength.

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#3)

My moles in Streatham think it is now a two horse race between Chuka Umunna and Steve Reed (though I suspect the other candidates might have something to say about that).  I have met and worked with both.  They both bring different things to the table and are good guys.  Along with the others mentioned above, members will certainly have a great choice.  I believe all would be excellent MPs.

I am also pleased to see that - unlike in other selections - the members in Streatham have shown admirable restraint on these pages.  Negativity which has appeared on this site in relation to other selections in the past will have only benefited Labour’s political opponents.

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#4)

Chuka has media appeal, and ticks all the boxes.

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#5)

What boxes are those that he ticks? And are we now only to select candidates whom the media like? What about political beliefs?

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#7)

...young, talented, BME, media savvy, and a member of Left-Wing Compass, pretty much wraps it up. And we do need people who can communicate effectively; its no good keeping the messages we've got to get across to the punters out there all to yourself.

Re: Streatham shortlist announced (#6)

If your candidate becomes your MP it's very helpful to have good relations with the media (particularly the local media).
