School Trips to Auschwitz

Tories face uproar over accusing Labour of "gimmicks"

I would like to think that the Tories' concerns are genuine here (after all, I hate to think that they would stoop so low as to make political capital out of the Holocaust), as indeed is Labour's commitment on this issue.
But to make an accusation of making a  "gimmick" is not only ill-thought out, it is deeply offensive and not only does it show how the Tories' have some way from shaking the "nasty" label, it would do well for them to apologise to all concerned

Re: School Trips to Auschwitz (#1)

I went to Auschwitz earlier this year as part of the LFA trip which has government support. It was one of the best things i have ever done.

I wouldn't say i enjoyed it, but i appreciated it greatley and am very glad that i went. It was thought provoking.

It is most certianly not a gimmick.

Re: School Trips to Auschwitz (#2)

I agree.  I went to visit both Auschwitz and Dacau as a teenager.  Everyone should have the opportunity to visit both.  It puts the world in perspective and teaches people about what happens when humanity is violated.

Re: School Trips to Auschwitz (#3)

In fairness to the conservatives, their comments were intended to be about the fact the govt said they would provide funding then it 'turned out' that schools would have to pay £100.

Its basically a big PR gaffe. That said, I don't believe I ever read any of the trip news at the time and was given the impression the govt would provide 100% of the funding, so I think it was a tenuous excuse to try label something a 'gimmick' in the first place.

I read the entire list of supposed gimmicks, some of them were accurate enough, but I felt a few of them were just there so they could try get the soundbite 'a gimmick for every week he's been in power' - typical cameron I guess.

Re: School Trips to Auschwitz (#4)

What typical in that he is so keen to get a soundbite that there is no pause to check for any offensive comments!
