Blair for President?

..of the Eu

"Tony Blair has been holding discussions with some of his oldest allies on how he could mount a campaign later this year to become full-time president of the EU council, the prestigious new job characterised as "president of Europe". Blair, currently the Middle East envoy for the US, Russia, EU and the UN, has told friends he has made no final decision, but is increasingly willing to put himself forward for the job if it comes with real powers to intervene in defence and trade affairs."

As Baldrick would say : "He's stickier than the stickiest stick insect that ever sat on a sticky bun."

Re: Blair for President? (#1)

Go for it Tony - it's about time we had a real leader in Europe, not some non-entity from Luxembourg.

Re: Blair for President? (#2)

what's wrong with Luxembourg?

Re: Blair for President? (#3)

Tony is a fool of if he really thinks he can carry the Presidency. As Blackadder would say its like carrying bean curds baked in jelly throgh a sieve up a steep slope. Apart from Sarkozy, I don't think Blair's got any frieds in Europe.

Re: Blair for President? (#4)

I think Blair would be great as a leader of the EU, he can send all their troops to wars, and leave ours alone

Re: Blair for President? (#5)

Given that we're in the EU treborc, a fair bulk of the EU troops will be ours!

Re: Blair for President? (#6)

I think it was merely any attempt to have a facetious swipe at Blair. Hopefully, Blair can finally sort out the CAP.

Re: Blair for President? (#11)

:) You are rocking, man!

Re: Blair for President? (#7)

Well the show isn't over yet, he might not get it. That said does the EU Presidency need an expansion of it's powers! It's certainly a move that will further give kudos to the Euro-Skeptics. Plus I am not to happy about Blair being the right person for the job. His being on the board of JPMorgan makes one wonder how seriously he is taking his role of Middle Eastern envoy!

Re: Blair for President? (#9)

I would also need a heart of stone not to laugh at your comment, the Daily Mail venacular permeating it's way into this debate, a paper which has the perspicacity of a fruit fly. There are always rediculous connotations to Labour being akin to an authoritarian, Big Brother like regime. Do they need to improve our democracy? Yes. Have I thought we should perhaps leave for EFTA? Yes. But I believe we also need to put Labour's flawed record on civil liberties into perspective, when juxtaposed with the regimes we're comparing them to.

Re: Blair for President? (#10)

Just a little bit of info for you - many Eurosceptics point to Norway and Switzerland as beacons of freedom outside the EU.

Of course, these observant people would also realise that in many ways both Norway and Switzerland are more integrated with Europe than we are. Both are fully signed up to the Schengen Zone for example, where as we are not. So presumably those advocating for us to join 'EFTA' would be quite happy for us to join Schengen as well. Also, Norway and Switzerland pay a hefty price to be part of the free trade area, without having the privilege of being able to have any say over what the rules are.

Also, I doubt Norway and Switzerland will stay out of the EU for much longer.

Any break up of the UK would make it more likely that we'll all be more integrated into Europe. If Scotland and Wales go independent, then they'll both join the Euro and probably Schengen (with Ireland). English people won't like the idea of having to change currencies and show passports at our borders every time we leave the country. As the Eurozone expands ever outwards towards the East and Scandanavia too, there'll be far more pressure for us to join as well.

Joining the Euro and Schengen is inevitable for us either way.
