Labour GenSec decision up, may not be party member
The NEC will shortly be deciding on the new General Secretary of the Labour Party. Although the whole process hasn't had much press coverage, it's a crucial one in the future of the Labour Party.
I'm interested in what people are looking for from the person who gets the job.
In my opinion we need someone who can get our finances back on track, has an eye for the rules and someone to enthuse the party again.
Someone who is versed in the traditions of the Labour Party - a person of the movement - who has the organisational ability to get things done.
I think this article in Tribune got it about right. "..an essential factor in turning round the gloom will be the dedication and energy of a democratic and inclusive party with a strong general secretary."
But one thing I also noticed in the article was the fact that the job spec that candidates are being matched against does not include membership of the Labour Party.
Tribune are well connected so I don't doubt what they are saying is true. I know that makes me really worried - a broad cabinet is one thing, but surely the head of the party should be a Labour Party person.
What do you think? What are the new challenges for our new General Secretary? What are you looking for in the candidate?
