Grassroots rejects detention extension

In a poll of over 100 readers, Labourhome.org has discovered that three quarters of members and supporters oppose government proposals to extend detention without trial beyond 28 days.

The decision to introduce 28-day detention was one of the most contentious issues of Blair's later premiership, haveing to be scaled down from an initial proposal of 90 days.

The poll on Labourhome asked readers "Police should be able to detain suspects without charge for how long?"

After 100 votes, readers responded overwhelmingly against further extension of detention powers, with the following choices.

24 hours - 18 %
2 days - 32 %
28 days - 23 %
42 days - 8 %
90 days - 17 %

Most surprisingly, the figures show that 50% of Labour members and supporters who answered the poll would support a reduction of detention powers to either 24 or 48 hours.

17% backed an extension to 90 days, which is beyond the Government's current proposals.

Re: Grassroots rejects detention extension (#1)

I voted for 2 days, but only because I would like to see it cut from 28 and my preferred option of 14 days wasn't an option in the poll. Just thought I'd point that out.

Re: Grassroots rejects detention extension (#3)

14 days is my preferred option as well. Is it possible to include it to the poll?
