Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#1)

Does anyone know who is in the running for Streatham?

Presumably Lambeth Leader Steve Reed is. I believe has got various trade union nominations but who else?

I imagine its quite a desirable seat being only five miles or so from Westminster and in (Labour controlled) Lambeth.

Are there any 'big beasts' likely to lose their seats due to boundary changes who are going to put their hats in the ring?

I think there are just 2 Labour MPs left seatless by boundary change seats reduction: Eddy O'Hara in Knowsley (but I think he's already over 70) and the loser of the Ian Stewart/Hazel Blears fight for Salford & Eccles constituency (did it happen yet?).
The remaining areas with seats reducations should have already worked out the "more MPs than seats" problem (with MPs retiring and/or MPs finding a new seat)

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#2)

Incidentally, I have been shortlisted in Chelsea & Fulham, selection's on 17th February

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#7)

Good luck Alex!

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#4)

Good luck Alex,  I have been purusaded to stand for the NEC in consitituency section

More work!!!

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#5)

Chuka Umunna, a local party activist, is standing in Streatham. His campaign website is now up and running.

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#6)

Chuka? Local? Activist? Compass? It's in the bag.

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#8)

I've met Chuka when he was a student at Manchester, and came across to me as one to watch in the future, a "papabili", if you like. He'll make a good MP.

However, it would be nice if Jon Worth declared that the "campaign website [that] is now up and running", was designed by him!

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#9)

Streatham didn't always used to be considered as a safe Labour seat. It was represented for years by Sir William Shelton and only went Lab in 92

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#13)

I think its consdered fairly safe now - boundary changes have shifted chunks of Brixton Hill into the seat since the days of Tory MPs and so fortress Lambeth will I'm fairly sure remain labour - three Labour MPs, Labour borough council, Labour GLA member - as it should be!

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#10)

Sorry, but it's pretty clear that I'm behind it as it says on the footer of the pages of Chuka's website, and also there's a link to my site in the sidebar. That's quite a lot more open than a lot of the politicking going on here!

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#11)

I have to stick with Patrick vernon with this one.  He may not be exactly my politics, but he is on the unite panel

After further consultation, I have discovered Patrick is a member of the LRC and I feel he would make a great candidate for Streatham.

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#14)

Quite a few candidates have literature out, websites up and are knocking on members doors.

The front-runners appear to be Steve Reed, Chuka Umunna and Cathy Ashley.

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#15)

Cathy Ashley?!??!!  Are you SERIOUS?!

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#16)

Excuse my ignorance but who is Cathy Ashley and whats her background?

Re: Streatham selection starts with open shortlist (#17)

To answer the question about Cathy Ashley, she is the Chief Executive of Family Rights Group a national charity focusing on the most vulnerable, and she was the coordinator of a group of parents who created Elmgreen Comprehensive School in Lambeth - the first (and to date, only) parent-promoted comprehensive school in the country.  She was also a Councillor in Lambeth in the late 80s, bringing in the Council's first doorstep recycling scheme.

She gave (probably) the best performance at the Streatham hustings, coming third behind the winner Chuka Umunna.
